Hi guys,

im currently trying to troubleshoot my bosses outboard, its a 135HP V6 Mariner (2 Stoke Premix) not sure of the model or year, for some reason it dosent have anything stamped onto the motor but i am assuming its late 80s or realy early 90s

i replaced the water pump and impeller about 6 months ago and it only has 5 hrs since that and the impeller has broken apart and actually melted into the housing, i have replace that and cleaned any traces of the old impeller out.

now the problem i am having is i cant get water to flow through the motor while it is running, i have flushed the motor out from the tell tail to flush any bits of impeller out (with the lower unit off) i have removed the t'stats and flushed the motor out and checked that water flow where it should ( i connected the hose to the copper pipe in the exhaust housing) the water pump and impeller are new but when i start it i cant seem to get any water out of anywhere

i have tried running the motor with the t'stat covers off and all i seem to get is air preasure :(

i am thinking mabey it has a cracked head or gasket (compression test as soon as i can find the tester lol) if anyone has any ideas that would be appreciated as i dont really want to take the heads off as i am assuming they havent been off in a few years and i dont want to run into the whole broken head bolt thing :(

Check the Lu strainers where the water intake is. Make sure it,s not clogged with sand or debris. This may be why the new impellor exploded as it had no water being pulled up unto the housing. You say you attached the garden hose to the copper pipe and no water was circulated? If so the gromet or washer may have melted in the exhaust base and blocked off the port hole nesecary to get water to the block. Powerhead removal will have to be undergone to replace these parts if they are your problem. Check the exhaust plate for blockage and change the gasket while your there so you don,t have to go back in there again If this is the problem. Good luck

A v6 Merc/Mariner will also have a poppit valve. It makes sense to rebuild that as well.

One more thing. Pull the waterpump base and you will be able to see the water intake passage. I have had to dig out barnacles from that area that caused my Mercruiser to overheat.

The serial number is on the motor mounting bracket. Also did u change the complete water pump housing and all gaskets because I just had a problem with a 150 mariner where the metel housing inside broke free and it would not pump water. Also when u pull the poppit valve flush from there also. Becareful not to push the rubber sral into the motor its a pain to get out if u do

thanks for that,

the impeller and base are new, pump base and intake grates are spotless now. i do have perfect waterflow when the garden hose is plugged into the copper pipe

also with the serial number the motor im assuming someone has repainted it or something becasue there is not any numbers on the motor

Did you check the bottom waterpump base for wear or warpage? Overtourque could cause dips bends and basicly an uneven surface for the metal plate. I had to get a complete water pump becuase I overtourqued it. Are you sure the metal Key shim for the impellor is btween it and the shaft? Also I have seen aftermarket impellors spin even just after installing(Impellor stands still the ring turns) You.ll know if you put your pinky in there and turn the ring while holding the impellor.I suggest you get an OEM Mercury Impellor!!!!!!!!

The whole water pump assembly and impeller is new and genuine I am fairly sure the pump itself is fine just not getting water to the motor

I would if nothing eles works check the impellor like I said. I took mine out two times and it(new impellor) spun. If your getting full flow with the hose through the engine with a hos then its down there in the lower You said the stariner aerea is clear. You removed the strainer and found nothing. well if thats the case your going to have to remove the water pump to see what the deal is. weather a clogged port to the pump a missing shim for the impellor a spun impellor or whatever your going to have to take it back off.

Dose this LU have a shallow water pick up? It would be located in the rear I think by the trim tab anode? If so it may be blocked or not getting enough water.

not sure of the model or year, for some reason it dosent have anything stamped onto the motor but i am assuming its late 80s or realy early 90s(

There will be a build date stamped on the bottom of # 2 cylinder right where the two halves bolt together. Kinda behind tha advance timing arm. It will be 1/8" stamped numbers. Will be month/day/year
