If replacing the water pump and t-stats do not solve the problem there is a third possibility. There are rubber deflectors in both heads that may need to be replaced.

Oh and by the way do yourself a favor and get the OMC shop manual for your engine.

They are supposed to be that way.

Look at the base of the impeller. If one side is more deeply recessed than the other at the center, that side goes down. If the sides are the same it does not matter.

The easiest way to install the impeller is to set it in place with the key, then push down on the housing as you turn the driveshaft clockwise. If you use a little dishwashing soap it will make installation easier.

This is similar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj1c4oYpHAw

The water tubes on your motor have guides that need to be pulled down to help insertion into the water pump housing.

There is an o-ring for the driveshaft; it goes in the groove near the top, just below the splines.
