135hp 1977 prop shaft nut Qusttion

motor came without a prop. I have the prop spacer ( that goes on before the prop) and one nut that threads on to the shaft. The parts diagram shows a second cone shaped nut called prop nut and a prop nut pin. There is a hole through the end of the shaft, where I assume the locking pin goes. So do I realy need the $30 cone shaped prop nut, or can I add a simple "castle" backup nut with a cotter pin?

No, you do not need the cone. There is NO performance loss without it. Yes, you can use a 1/8 or 3/16 diameter cotter pin. If you are really careful and work slowly, it is possible to tap the hole to 1/4-20 and use a bolt. Really though: that's overkill. The nylock nut is sufficient.

These first three photos are not using the tailcone or flare washer. I have them but they will not fit on some props. They do look pretty though so I do use them whenever I can, like in these two photos.
