it depends on what gear case you have...some of the 140 HP motors came with the large gear case. you can put it on there and make sure you have good clearance..or put what ever size one you have on and measure the clearance. I do not think they make a 14.5' prop for the smaller 13 spline shaft. go here http://boatpropellers.iboats.com/Ev...r=1981&**********=218463345&*******=927422151
I did find one 14" prop but no 14.5 for your motor, they were all around 13..so my guess is that the 14.5 prop you have is a 15 spline and will not fit your motor..unless someone put a large gear case on it, and they would have had to change the drive shaft to do that, so I doubt it.

thanks sparky
yeah the one i was looking at is off a volvo penta and its 18 or 19 spline so i guess it wont work
can they be rehubbed or is that a different diameter too?

The Volvo hub is 19 spline and that prop can be rehubbed to fit a 15 spline OMC / BRP propshaft. However, your 81 V4 came with a gearcase that has 13 splines and a 14 1/4" diameter prop will not clear the AV plate. But if your gearcase has 15 splines then someone has changed the gearcase and the 14 1/4" prop will clear.

i dont think anyone changed it
isnt that gearcase notoriously weak behind that motor? if so how involved is it to change to a later one and is any reliability gained in doing so?

Don't think I've ever heard of a 81 V4 gearcase being refered to as "weak". We used to run that style on V6s to reduce drag. You can run a V6 gearcase if you want to so you can run a 14 1/2" prop.

easier and cheaper and probably all around better to just get the right prop...Also I am pretty sure the V-6 cases have a different gear ratio.

Actually there are several gear ratios in cases that will bolt on the V4. But the original question was will a 14 1/2" diameter prop fit on a 1981 V4. The answer is not if the gearcase is a 13 spline V4 gearcase but yes it will if someone has changed to a gearcase with a 15 spline shaft.

The OMC cleaver made for the V-4 was 12.5" diameter, I seem to recall. In any case, 14.5" is way too much,
you'll lose performance. I ran a 1978 Evinrude 140 on a 16' Allison some years back.
