I also found a manufacturers data plate that states it is rated for a 25 HP

Dillpickle I don't know about SC Pa. but around here in SE Wi and N Illinios those 25hp Johnnyrudes are everywhere. I've seen mid 70's to early 80's nice one selling for as little as $350.00. That would really be the way to go now that you have the capacity info to go by!

well I may have a saving grace here....the motor that I got with the boat is a 9.9 evinrude. It runs but runs rough and needs a complete tuneup, and a thorough wintertime re-do. It's a 1975. It also needs a new impeller and I will have to see what else once I get it opened up. I was doing some reading and found that the biggest difference between the 9.9 and the 15 HP was the size of the venturi in the carburator. I may do a carb swap and a tuned exhaust swap, along with the air box if I can find one. That may or may not get me up to 15 HP but it will definitely be an improvement over 9.9, and it also seems like it is a much lighter motor than the big hoss I have on there now(10HP Seahorse(1958)).

I'm not so sure it's much lighter than a 10 hp, or any better. Gotta remember the 9.9 use electronic ignitions which were rather unreliable, especially when compared to the super simple and reliable magneto on the 10 hp, but I'm biased. I had a QD-22 that was a great little motor. These links may help you decide.

If it were me I'd clean up both those outboards and sell them off and trade up to mid to late 70's 25hp and be done with it. Accept to maybe trade up to an entirely different bigget boat of course.

I would probably get rid of the tri-hull myself. They're sort of a bad compromise in hull design that was in popular for a while, but has since fallen out of favor, and for good reason. I'd try to find a semi-V hull, if at all possible as it will most likely give you the the best overall performance. A 20-25 hp may be nice, but I'd stick with the magneto ignition. There's a reason so many of us still prefer them to the "improved" electronic ignitions that followed. Here are some compelling reasons why you should keep it simple and stay old school and use a magneto ignition vs. the newer "improved" models, particularly from the 70's. There's a reason most folks will take motors from the 50s-60s, but then tend to jump over many of the 70s and 80s models. Not the least of which is the fact that you can rebuild and entire magneto (coils, points & condensers, plugs and plug wires) for the price of a single power pack, assuming you can still get the part. Plus, the old motors are great conversation pieces at the dock and look WAY cooler, which is just as important ;)

Way back when I was a kid in Illinios the trip to make was from Fox Lake south down the Fox River through the locks in McHenry and end at the dam in Algonquin Illinios. Used to take the better part of the day to go down and back. Today there is so much traffic on the river I don't think I'd do it.

Sorry, wrong thread. Had 3 different ones open at the same time.

Ok so get rid of the outboards, get rid of the tri hull....get a semi V and a newer motor.....

You guys are killin me here....truth be told though I originally was going to get a 14 Grumman...but it needed a lot of work, so I went with the trihull...and quite honestly I am kinda regretting that decision as I feel that the Johnson would have moved the grumman through the water better than it is this fiberglass boat.

Problem now is that I am kinda stuck with it for a few years, as the market around here on used boats isnt the greatest.

I actually like the fiberglass boat I just wish that the motor I am using would push it a little better.

Dillpickle I'm not one to suggest you get rid of the boat. My suggestion was that the 2 engines you have now still hold a reasonable value and for what you could get for those 2 engine, at least in my area, you could find a very nice mid to late 70's 25hp which would solve your power issue. And in some cases still have coin left in your pocket. Here in Wisconsin that 9.9hp sells for about the same as a 25hp and at times for even more than a 25hp.
