Sorry I'm not much help with the mechanical stuff but like Gus said a compression test would give you a good idea of it's shape .

Yup...compression was 120 & 118..excellent! Drained a bit of lower unit oil...no milk. Presumed water pump good as it is pissing like a racehorse. I hate grown-up decisions with my cash!!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Good morning Gus...well I slept on it, not too soundly! I am going to call my merc guy back home who happens to still be working on the other engine(Mariner 30hp), trying to put those seals in. Gonna run the situation by him & see what he thinks. Also, here in Tavares, my dad has a marina near that has a guy he uses. Gonna call him & pick his brain in a few minutes. I don't think this thing is worth more than $500 "running" & don't think I'll give more than $400 the way it is. As of last nite, though, the PO won't budge less than $500 so I think we will go our separate ways. Update you later.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Well...changes happened right after I posted this morning, Gus. I was all ready to call the guy (as promised & say no thanks). I got a phone call from my merc guy around the corner who I had left a message for last nite. I explained the motor best I could & he said it was a great little motor, it has great compression, don't worry about the fuel thing; prob the carb or fuel pump, & parts were not an issue as he said "they didn't change much in these little motors". He said a buddy of his who is a duck hunter has 5 of these little 25's & would buy another given the chance. Sooo...I called the guy, told him I could only do $400..much to my surprise, he took it. Went over, picked it up, drove 4 hrs & we are back home. So of course when I got it home & off the truck, I started piddling with it. Turns out the problem, I think, is the fuel filter. I did not see this yesterday although it was in plain sight, but if you look at the photos above, you'll see a little piece of monofilament line around the top of the fuel filter. This was half-arse holding a nipple on the fuel line that leaves to go to the carb. This nipple fits loosely into filter, therefore sucking air. I held it on tight & she purred like a kitty! Ran some seafoam thru it too. Think ok. Will put it on my son's 14' & do a trial soon. Cross our fingers. Even my son couldn't believe how clean.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Hey fellas...long time! The last month has just flown by. Haven't been avoiding the boat or all you wonderful friends. Life, work, & some persistent illnesses in the house have gotten in the way of the life of a backyard boat restorer. So, when last we spoke, had just got the little engine. Ordering fuel filter, carb & fuel pump rebuild kits, & desperately need float. Took it out last wknd & all of sudden, during idle, she died. Noticed some fuel in the water behind the engine. Turns out the float has a leak, it was full of fuel/stuck & fuel coming out of overflow. Quick fix once I get the parts. So, more importantly, the boat......I have worked the last few wks on the casting deck trying to get it finished. Last wknd, I woke up & told myself to quit fartin' around with perfection & just get it done. So, with the exception of the edges of the opening, it is done as well as the non-skid, & up the sides. This will now enable me to tackle attaching the cap. I am a bit indecisive(imagine that?) about whether to gel the cap, then install or install then gel. Just don't want to mess up what I've already done. Tackle that issue on Saturday. In addition, you will notice on the pics that I glassed in a pvc pipe on each side exiting out from under the casting deck. We did this on the son's boat (on one side) to facilitate his fuel line, cables, etc. I am not anticipating needing much, let alone on both sides(prob just lights, bilge pump), but went ahead & put one on each side so the boat wouldn't list to one side or the other(I'm so full of it!). Ok, ok......enough of the blah, blah, blah...here's some pics. Again, sorry it's been so long...I've missed ya'll!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Welcome back, Lisa...
Hope all of the ailments are good and gone...
Glad to see you have been busy.
Really like the way the Two-Tone casting deck looks...
Did you add some blue tint to the white gel?
Did the white gel have wax in it?
If yes, did you have to sand it before applying the tinted gel?
When you masked off the central area, at what point in the cure did you remove it?
Did you add extra texture to the blue area?
Like "Woody" always says, "Details, we need details"...:D
I am going through a similar thing with the carburetors on my buddy's boat and one of the Mercury gurus told me I could find the float I need here...Search Results - Crowley Marine...
Just plug in your serial number...
Good Luck!
Happy Friderday!:watermelon:

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Hi Gus!! Good to be back...Just so much "ick" in my house right now. Wiping me out. So here's the scoop(s)...I always envisioned 2-tone for the deck(s) on this boat. Once the seats are built & in, the full deck will be done the same way. When we did the boy's boat a couple yrs ago, he chose Kiwi Grip. At about $80 bucks a quart, I gotta tell ya, I was not impressed. He has used that boat moderately in the last yr & I am not happy with how it has held up. For instance, He sits on a cooler behind the console & where it scoots around, it has really worn down to nothing. I knew I wanted/needed grip, but that wasn't going to be it for me. As you know, the outer hull is white gel on the bottom, & gray gel on the sides. I went kinda dark on the outer gray, so tried to meet myself halfway for the deck. Wanted it to be grayish, but not too dark for our obvious hot feet moments in August! So, it turned out gray enough to see the difference between the white gel, but not as dark as the outside of the boat. I am happy with it. So, to start, I put a couple of layers of white gel (rolled) on the deck & up the sides under where the cap will be. No wax. I let this kick, then eyeballed a tape line on the inside(where the gray would be) so I could finish the white border & up the sides with waxed white gel. Only took a couple of thin coats & that was done. I removed the tape immediately, although I was not too concerned with a hard edge as the gray was coming next & would overlap slightly plus have texture. Never know it was there. After the white waxed get kicked, I taped from the white outer edge/opposite to prepare for the gray, overlapping slightly. I did a thin coat of gray gel without wax, & immediately sprinkled a medium coarse pumice/sand over it(sifted it actually). I let it sit on for a few minutes, then gently, from a distance blew off the excess with my compressor. Let it set for a few more minutes, then did a quick waxed couple of thin coats of gray over the sand. Seems ok. We'll see how it holds up. Gotta be better than Kiwi...& cheaper too! If I'm up to it tomorrow & get a few catch-ups done at homefront, I might finish getting that cap ready to go on; hopefully by next wknd. As far as the carb, I actually checked with iboats for the float. Called them yesterday...they were going to call the Sierra guy directly & see if he could match one up. She called today & said they couldn't help. Bummer. I, too, checked with Crowley(but I did try iboats first), & they too said they can't get it. I will check with my Merc guy whose been working on the other one(Mariner). Hopefully he can hook me up. Speaking of the Mariner, went over there this morning & finally thinks he got the right seals for it. Had to have the Yamaha guy order as that particular Mariner was made in Japan...get it? My iboats contact today this little 25 Merc was made in Belgium! I can sure pick em. Whew...my fingers are tired. Really good to hear from you though, Gus. I been a watchin' your progress. We better hurry, cause it's gonna be hotter than Billy B Damned soon! Enjoy the wknd!!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Thanks for the detailed reply, really helps to make sense of it all for me...Since I am still far and away from deciding what I am going to put down as my final deck coating...
BTW, if all else fails on tracking down the float, and any other parts you might need...I have a very special contact that may be able to help out...keep that in mind and PM me if you need me to get hold of him...

I would only laugh harder if I weren't coughing & snotting so much!! You don't miss anything, Sam. Yeah, family of 5 & 3 refrigerators still can't hold enough food! As far as pic #1, I forgot....I decided to connect the pieces OUTSIDE of that cramped area...then install. It went pretty well. Sealed it up pretty well with resin & couple layers of mat. Only about 15" to get my big head & linebacker shoulders in to do final glassing in. Sure wasn't fun, but it's over now! Gus, I have one option to find that float, & I think it's a good one, but I will sure keep your offer in mind. As always, thanks boys!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Quicky update; Gus, I found the float for the little merc-got it from pro marine over on the west coast. Got it today, put the carb back together & on. Pul led her once & she fired right up...no fuel engorging the carb. So hopefully that is done. So, how hot was it the last few days? Holy moly...I know how hot it was because as I gelled the cap in my (wink wink) paint room (I love empty foreclosed houses), I was a sweatin' so hard it dripped off my nose into my gel!! So it didn't happen if I don't prove it with pics. Here it is sitting where it will, hopefully, soon become permanent. If I can get a couple burly fellers together on Saturday, over she goes on her back once more so I can sphelps PB this bad boy on permanently. Off a few days in a row, so goal #1 is to get it over. Then I can work my she-magic!!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Glad to hear you got the float and the engine purred to life, Awesome!
The bow cap is looking right at home...hope you can get 'er flipped...
even if you don't find the burly doods...you can prolly get a couple of old tires on the ground and some old comforters, and gently roll it over into turtle position...
Hurry up weekend!:D

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Well, today, 3rd day off & still no flip. For something that takes about 90seconds, sure is hard to coordinate. Today was just not a good day. After "wasting" (translation-frustration at level orange) the last 2 days, I crawled out from my cave this morning, arranged 4 he-man-woman-haters to be at my house at 5:30p.m., & promptly decided not to waste the day. "I'll cut the transom out since I can't work on the cap until the flip," I said. Took me all of about 10minutes. "I should put the engine on & take it down to the canal(4houses away) & run it," I said, so I can make sure the height is good, no cavitation. I'll run it real quick, come back, take the engine off, resin, glass....be done by 5:30 for the flip. Uhhhh-yeah.....that's where I should've stopped. Good news, I was able to find some complete stranger at the boat ramp (Jose!!!) to help me put the engine on, so my back is still good. Yup, that's the only good news of the day. In one rushed breath, here goes.....so I got the engine on, had to move 2 boats to get this one out of the back yard(love the golf cart), went to the boat ramp, got her off the trailer, pushed away from the ramp & the rope broke while on just the second pull trying to start the engine, so I luckily had put an oar in & was able to get back to the ramp, so I took her over to the Merc guy around the corner to show off the boat, let him see the engine, & get another rope, then went a block further to my welder/fabricator buddy to let him see the progress, & after leaving his shop, looked in mirrors & all of a sudden couldn't see the boat, why??? because one of the bunks, you know the ones with brand new hardware, apparently weren't tight enough because it just rolled right over, so the hull that I just spent the last 4 months sanding & gelling to my perfection was now resting on the fender of the trailer, so I unhooked the trailer where she sat (pretty much in the middle of a busy road), & went back to my buddies shop, got a couple guys, who lifted that side of the boat so I could lay in the biggest bunch of stickers where my backside was off the road, to loosen the bolts further so I could twist the bunk back upright, then retighten, with success only to get back home, fix the pull-start rope, take back to the ramp again, only to have it not start, as if float or needle was stuck, so back home, tear carb apart AGAIN which I now believe should be an Olympic event that I would surely medal in, clean & back together, back to ramp, she runs(for now).....WHEW(deep breath)!! I guess I forgot another silver lining: (a)I only cried twice today & (b)I only told one lady to f*%*-off in the parking lot when I picked my daughter up from work! The day ended with an as promised 5:30 flip & tomorrow, can only get better! So how was your day?
