Your tag says 50 hp maximum. I think I would go with that. Not going to be any noticable extra weight with 40 vs 50 hp. Might make the difference with two fat A#$ in the boat:D Welcome & keep the pics coming.

I'd certainly hang a 50 on it.

I'm also '77 vintage. My boat's a '76 though.

Anyone know if i need a long or short shaft on this puppy ? .. its a small boat so initially one would assume short shaft but ... looking at the transom .. it SEEMS to look like more than 15" .. as per online boating tools. if transom is over 17" tall, i can use a long shaft.

Help.

Thanks

You will need a longshaft outboard on that rig.

Anything over 25hp should plane it out, depending on the weight/balance. I'd want a 50hp just cause it would be fun and helps get ya outta the rain/lightning quickly if needed.:)

Great boat, I love the 14-15 footers. I wouldn't hesitate to mount a 50 hp, it will probably weigh around 200 lbs.

OK ... more pics to come .. the boat was finally delivered this friday .. i parked it in its spot, put the boat up on jack stands in the back and 2 tires in the front, and slipped out the vintage 1977 trailer out from under it.

Info on the trailer.

Will need a total strip and paint job.
( may look into how expensive local shop will charge to sand blast and powder coat or paint )

Will need completely new lights and wiring. ( can do easily myself )

WIll need completely new bunks or i may just go roller all around and skip bunks. Opinions on this ? pics to follow for added guidance.

Will need new winch and strap. ( easy buy at walmart )

Will need new bow roller, maybe new mid keel and transom roller. ( easy fix )

Starboad side hub is the old school kind where you have BOLTS instead of studs and lug nuts. The other side has standard hub with studs and lug nuts. I may check out price for new hub on starboard side.

leaf springs are rusted but seem to be structurally sound. May replace if i can get new ones cheap so i don't have to pay sand blasting place more time to sand blast those also.

Needs new trailer coupler and safety chains. Has 1 7/8" coupler on there now and it has seen way better days. I'm going to grind off and replace with 2" new coupler.

Already replaced rims and tires with new ones from walmart at $35 a piece.
Lost receipt so i am already ALL IN on this project.

I'm going to price out the parts and see if its worth it. I may be better getting whole new lightly used trailer off craigslist. But then i'll have to make it work for my boat which will cost more money anyways.

lastly, PO doesn't have paperwork so i'm going to have to do the 'homemade' route on the trailer. Which if anyone knows is a PITA.

Thats all for now. I'll snap pics tomorrow after work at 530.

wish me luck.

This is my trailer set-up. I'm extremely pleased with it. Combined with my guide bunks, I could load the thing drunk. Haven't managed to get it loaded crooked yet

A new LED light set wired with ground wires will give you trouble-free service.

Look into just getting a complete axle from Tractor Supply or the like. They are cheap and come complete with hubs. No more messing with possible hard-find parts. Northern Tool even has some complete axle and spring assemblies that may work for you and are extremely reasonable. If the sandblasting is affordable definitely go that route.

Chris, with my limited experience and what I have read concerning Starcrafts, the bunks are better than rollers. If the boat sits a while on rollers you may get indentions at the contact points. I would suggest bunks like EZ and others have.

new LED light set wired with ground wires

some geeks have even been known to set up multiple grounding points to the trailer frame, just in case your trailer gets near a wet environment or something...

good plan...grounds, like bungees & tiedowns, are one thing to overdo given the affinity of the evil deity MURPHY for them:eek:

Thought about purchasing plastic fenders for 20 bucks a piece at tractor supply. Would have looked real sharp once done but then i thought about how much money i spent today on parts and supplies for this and i decided a litttle free elbow grease, hammering back to shape and paint would be much cheaper. Heck like my dad always says, " I'm not building a church here ".

Price check so far.

Boat and trailer together $260
new winch at walmart with strap $26.71
new tractor supply axle, ubolt kit and extra bolts for trailer winch riser $140.46
2" coupler at walmart $19.98
tow chain $19.48 ( going to return and get cheaper at tractor supply )
2 qts rustoleum rusts top paint/primer, 2 qts semi gloss white at walmart $25
submergeable trailer kit at walmart $28 ( also on sale at tractor supply for $20 so im returning tomorrow)
2 5 hole rims and tires at walmart $35 a piece plus tax.

So im in for about $595 so far and have some money comin back from walmart. I'll have everything i need to complete trailer. My dad donated 2 pressure treated 2x4's for the bunks.

What i need to complete trailer:
1. carpet to cover bunks
2. wire clips for neat wire job
ACC3.jpg

3. 1/2" and 3/4" rubber grommets for thru frame wire job ( holes already present )
4. new keel roller as the front keel roller has a dry rot gouge in it that is nasty.

I have to admit, i did buy some 3m scotchpad type rust wheels for my angle grinder but i have found the cheap steel harbor freight wire brush wheel my dad already had mounted to the angle grinder works perfectly fine so i'll be bringing those back to home depot so i did not include those in the price.

I'll have " after '" pics of the trailer in the next few days. The trailer folds in half, so i took the front half inside the garage and worked on it tonight, tomorrow i have to finish up the front and start on the back. The only thing that will hold me up is not having carpet for the bunks, and i forgot to buy stainless steel staples for the bunks.
I'd like to replace the springs and found them for $20 a piece at tractor supply but even tho these are vintage 1977, they are only rusty and seem structurally fine so i'll just wire wheel them and coat them with some black undercoating or something.
The work is going fast. I'm happy. When time comes to paint, i'll either brush on or ask a buddy to borrow his paint gun and try to spray it myself. I hope to maybe get him to invest a couple hours for me to paint it for me himself. I have no experience, however how hard can it be. You can thin rustoleum in the can up to 5 % with acetone and have at it . Again i'n not building a church or painting a ferrari .. it does NOT have to be super pretty just look good.
I'll catch up tomorrow. I'm dead tired.

Wow man, your trailer looks to be in about as poor of shape as mine! Good thing for you it's only about 1/2 the size though (= 1/2 the frustration).

Your boat will be waaayyyyy happier to be resting on new bunks than what she was sitting on, eh!

I got antsy this morning so i did this before i get ready for work. I hate working 830-5. By the time i get home its almost 6 and the sun is already on its way to setting. I wish i had more time off. I blew thru all my days off until january. If i could take today off from work, i would finish this trailer completely.

EDIT: Oh yea, and the 3-4 inches of missing trailer that i chopped off will never be noticed. I was considering an attempt at grinding and hacking off the previous coupler but then i realized the agony i would have subjected myself to. So the old harbor freight chop saw came out and i lopped that nasty thing off. On with the new coupler today after work.
Again stand by for more pics as progress allows.
