Re: 140 ho Evinrude

I found this motor for 500 bucks. guy say he is upgrading to a fuel injection 200 hp motor. he said the motor will be on the boat for two weeks to hear it run. 83' Johnson GT150. what do you think of this motor? I hear they are good motors. isn't both evinrude and Johnson same maker or about the same? I hope that I don't have to change anything in the hooking it up to what I have there seeing that it would be a Johnson not Evinrude. I can see Im going to have my work cut out on this but I have always wanted this type of boat.

Re: 140 ho Evinrude

I was thinking about the two different types of evinrude. I'm not even sure how to tell that and this guy isn't for sure about motors . hes the type that would run it to a shop. I want to learn so we are different for sure. lol anyway, all I can tell you is the top half/power hear is very short on height. you know how some outboards are real tall looking at them? this one is low profile, like it was squeezed downward. I don't know if that information would help you on telling the difference. I'm going to there tomorrow and I am going to take some pictures of the boat and motor and the rusted out part that I have been asking about. I don't know if I will be able to post them on here due to I have problems with the file being to large but I could email them to at least allow you to have a better view of what I have been asking about. I ask around about the cost of repairing it and 1100 dollars seem to be the going rate and I have found a few motors for cheaper but I want to hear them run and test before buying. anyway, Thanks for the help.

The 150 GT (Johnson) is a pretty good motor given proper care. Reliable, simple, decent technology. A bit thirsty compared to some, like the carb'd 150 Yamaha you mentioned. Thirsty and down on power compared to any EFI or DFI motor.

How bad as in thirsty? what is the term GT? I haven't heard anything back from this guy on email so far. I wanted to get the serial number and model number to do a search on the motor to get some ideas of what I was looking at. I don't need a gas guzzler like my 65hp Mercury outboard . its a 1973 model and it kills gas. with a limited price range, it going to be a tough find. the marine place down the road wants 2900 for a 130 Yamaha motor. he wanted 500 for that motor and I thought it was a good deal it is in good condition. welcome to suggestions on some motors to look for. Thanks

The 150 XP (Evinrude) and 150 GT (Johnson) were some motors OMC made that had different heads and styling. Some had port timing of the 200 crossflow. Very reliable and will serve you well with proper care. Your fuel consumption will all depend on how it's set up and how you run it. It won't break the bank but it will use more gas than a newer technology motor (naturally).

Just to compare, I had one of those motors on a 20' Dusky. On a Sunday trip with the familys I'd burn about 18-19 gallons and my buddy with his Mako and the 150 looper will burn 16. Not a huge difference but there is a difference.

Ok, this is what I found out on the motor that is on the boat. since I cant get pictures to post I have found a pic of midsection of motor. the motor is a 140hp on it. this website will show a diagram of the bracket area that is rusted on mine that the motors just flops around. http://www.crowleymarine.com/omc_parts.cfm. if you look at the pic, the steering shaft #7 you will see two bolts that hold it into the section there number is #41 and 42. when he attempted to remove them, one is broke off. that whole area needs to be replaced so at least you have some idea of what I am looking at if you see the picture of that motor midsection. maybe you can get a idea if that would be a motor to put money into fixing? I may have a friend who could help me on changing the parts. I haven't found another engine so far and the guy with the Johnson GT 150 hasn't returned any emails so I don't see that going anywhere . I do have a guy with a 1976 200hp Evinrude that hasn't ran in a year and may be a possibility that I could get it running there with a little work before I would buy it. my 1973 65hp sat for five yrs and it took me about 20 minutes to get it up and running, so that might work but two problems. 1) I don't know the weight and 2) if I get it running, he may want to up the price. he only wants $300 dollars for it now. just so much to consider here.
