140 hp Evinrude - Starting problems - Warm up lever

I have a 1978 Evinrude, 140 hp, model #140843C. I moved to AZ about a year ago and in the process, the moving company broke my remote control. It wouldn't go into reverse anymore. The company I got to replace it told me that the remote control for this engine was no longer available and they replaced it with a new remote control that does not have a warm up lever. Now the engine has a hard time starting. I have to push the throttle down into gear and crank on the engine and it will start. Of course this means that the boat moves forward as well. How important is the warm up lever for this engine? I have since found the actual remote control on line. I'm thinking about calling them and complaining and asking them to put the correct one on.

The warm-up lever is important because it advances the timing for a cold start.

However, most controls that don't have a warm-up lever have some kind of override that allows you to advance the throttle without being in gear.

On some you push the button at the center of the control arm and then move the arm forward.
On some you push the arm to one side or the other.

All of the units come with literature that should be passed on to the owner by the installer. It's part of the package you paid for and you should insist on having it; I know I would.

Hey THANKS! I feel like an idiot now. It's a teleflex control they installed andt there is a button in the center! I've never noticed it before. To my credit they did not give me any manual when I picked the boat up. I've got a call in to them to request it. I REALLY appreciate your response.
