Water coming from tell tale after starting engine on muffs does not come out as a steady stream, but sputters. Is this normal, or do I have a head gasket issue. Compression is 120, 120, 120, 115.

Tell us a little more about your motor. Year, model number for a start.
Have you given it a water pump service recently ?? are you in salt water or fresh ?? Did it used to be O.K. ?? Is the motor new to you ??
Let's start with that and go from there.

Re: 140 Johnson tell tale water

just bought the motor. 1985 looper, fresh water, water pump just changed. It moves water like crazy, just seems to sputter out the pee hole, not a nice smooth water stream. Rpms don't seem to make a difference.

Put some wee-eater line up the outlet. You probably just have a small clog in the line someplace.

You have the same motor both model and year that I have. The tell tale stream has never been super strong on it either. Done the flushing and the weed eater line on it as well. All to no avail !!!!
Best thing you can do in my opinion is to check the head temps with a heat gun to make sure you are not overheating. What temperature is the water coming out of the exhaust relief ports half way down the shaft ?? Does it still have the water control valve system or has it been converted to the newer version (1993 and up I think)
Another check you can do is to run at around 5,000 RPM for a bit and watch the intensity of the stream then throttle down to idle quickly and see if the intensity increases when you do and then slows again when it actually idles.
Let us all know.

Mine does the same thing. On mine it is caused by an 1/8th inch elbow on the block feeding a 1/8th inch hose which then connects to the pee outlet which is 1/4 in or slightly larger. It loses pressure there and just kind of sputters out. If you used a 1/4 elbow and hose the stream would be stronger but you may overcool that side of the engine.

Agree. Big outlet size.

Thanks so much guys! "maiden"voyage for me tomorrow. Bought her(17ft Edson 85 model) with a rod through the block. Picked up a good runner, bolted it on,changed water pump, just doesn't pee water like I thought it would. Wish me luck.

Re: 140 Johnson tell tale water

Well, a frustrating weekend on the water. Engine did not run well at all. Tachometer was very erratic, sometimes quitting completely. Engine stalled and surged a lot, would not pull more than 4500 rpm or so most of the time, sometimes only about 3000. Once it went up to almost 6000, went like a bat out of he!!......for about 4 seconds. Engine seemed to run on 3 cyls most of the time, sometimes only 2, VERY rarely all 4. Found a loose ground on the CDI, arced half way through the washer on top, fixed that. Changed fuel pump, really helped the stalling. Engine would not start at one point, cold start injector? quit working. Started at night and could see spark jumping off the plug wires, changed those. Coils tested fine, new plugs. I have read that a rectifier may cause all this, could that be? The good news, LOTS of water out the tell-tale.

Good to hear the tell tale stream is now a none issue. The rest is diagnostics of the issues you still have.
Good Luck.
