G'day, I took the boat out from under cover the other day to give the motor a short run and to keep the battery charged. While checking the motor out prior to heading down the coast for some fun times on the water. I noticed water trickling out of what looks to be a coroded hole in the exhaust manifold cover(holy sh#t). Can I plug this hole temporarly with steel putty or similar, or is it a mojor operation to change the cover. Help needed fast.

Oz

That is an Aussie S/N 806.. I Assume it's a 1982 Blueband (Light/dark Blue stripes)white mercury text and red "140"
:D :D
http://www.afcinternational.com.au/site/data/16002_tech.htm

You can patch it with the above putty (Has good heat resistance) but keep an eye on the plugs. If they are (steam cleaned) the water may be getting into the combustion chambers. Also check around the plug recesses.Mercs of this era are known for corroding water covers and exhausts.
But they are a fine motor... :D :D

BTW What part of Oz you from ??

Unicorn

Thanks for your reply, Glad that I will not have to perform major works prior to my summer holidays. By the way is it a difficult job to change the cover myself, any special tricks of the trade I need to know about?(picked one up from a wrecker just in case). I reside in the capital CANBERRA. The nick-name for us is the Bush Capital because of all the trees and open spaces around us (kind of fits in with your President at the moment, thats the way the media plays it up)

Cheers and Merry Xmas to all

Oz
I am from Melbourne Australia... and I am very familiar with your surroundings at Canberra. Drove through there a couple of days after the fatal Bushfires in Jan... 2003 :( :(
Hope you have better luck this summer.
Anyway.. back the the Merc.. The exhaust cover and the head water cover can be easy to replace as long as you don't break bolts. I am told that you will.. This means powerhead removal and drilling and tapping in new ones. There will be no problems using the Steel putty, as a fellow iboater has used it with success. If you want to do the whole corrosion elimination thing, wait until April, when you Canberians are cold and bored :D :D Then you can strip it down.
BTW If you don't already have one.. get a manual.
They are about $90.00 AUD

Look here...

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=009644
