140 Looper High Idle

Idle was fine for the last use in the fall. Did have a stalling on acceleration problem, but discovered a kink in one of the carb fuel delivery hoses so assume that was the stall issue.

Pulled the boat out of winter storage today. Replaced the kinked carb hose and started it up. It started up fine and ran good, however, the idle just kept creeping up and finally topped out at 2200 rpm (on the flushette/hose).

Checked all the fuel connections were tight, checked all the low/intermediate carb air jets weren't plugged, checked the carb floats were set ok.....still 2200 rpm idle.

Hoping the lakes will lose the ice in the next week so I can pop it in the water and see what idle is with some back pressure....but 2200 on the muffs seems way high....I was getting nervous just listening to it!!!

Any suggestions??

Make sure the ignition advance linkage mechanism is coming all the way back.
Its probably a bit stiff , what with that 11 month winter and all.

Re: 140 Looper High Idle

Checked the linkage last night and it was all the way back (ie. the stopper wouldn't allow it to go any further back). I suppose it could have moved to that position sometime after I had it running the prior day, but I doubt it. Unfortunately, didn't have time to try and run it again last night.

I'm going to haul it to a lake tomorrow evening and experiment a little. I will certainly check the linkage again to ensure that isn't the high idle probelm.

Assuming the linkage isn't the problem (ie. it is all the way back and I still have very high idle rpm), any other thoughts on things to check? Figured I'd ask now before I go to the lake.

Thanks.

if it is still cold up there, the lube is stiff on the timing plate, the timing plate may not be return as far as it should.

Re: 140 Looper High Idle

Dropped it in the lake last night and it ran better than ever. Idle was great....about 1200 in neutral, 800 in gear.

No idea what changed, so perhaps Tashasdaddy hit it on the nose with the stiff timing plate that loosened up.

Thanks for the assistance gentlemen!
