I'm having problem separating upper drive from bell housing.
I removed 6 nuts and have shift shaft facing forward in drive position.
Is there something else I need to do to get this booger off? I don't want to force anything, but will only separate about 1/8".
Is a 1977 pre alpha 140 mercruiser w/narrow splash plate. Don't know what else to do. HELP? Thanks

Re: 140 sterdrive separation?

Do you have the trim system off the drive? Once you do it should pull off. If it still won't it's OK to drop the drive a bit to shock free stuck pieces. It's OK to get a good hold on the drive so you can wiggle and wrestle it off of there. It's a little awkward to hold but if you have a good back it won't be overly heavy in your arms. One guy in a previous thread had a system to use the trim rams to push the drive off. Maybe he will pipe in.
Oh, also, I'd spray some thin oil in around the entry to the bellhousing in case the gasket is dry and stuck.

Thanks Guy, I'll try dropping it a bit. Trim is not working, the wires need replacing coming from the pump to trim. I already have removed the lower unit from the upper, just can't seem to get the upper to budge much. Maybe a little PB blaster will free it up. Getting dark now, I'll try tomorrow. Thanks
