140 V4 Starter Problems?

I have a 1983 140 HP V4 Johnson that I recently was getting ready for summer. Upon my normal startup I discovered water in my starter. I removed the starter cleaned all the windings and brushes and reinstalled. My problem now is that I cannot get the starter gear to come up and engage the flywheel and turn the motor over. If anyone has any ideas as to what my problem may be.

J

A weak battery can cause this. Check your connections to be sure they are tight and make sure the battery is fully charged. You may even want to use jumper cables direct to the starter to isolate it from the rest of the system. There is a special bendix lube that should be used. Is pretty thin so the bendix slides easily on the shaft in all temperatures.

Re: 140 V4 Starter Problems?

I charged the battery all night so I don't think its a battery problem. The starter seems to be spinning fast enough. I lubed the shaft and threads for the bendex with wd40 but it still doesn't rise to the flywheel. Is there a possibility that somehow i reversed the polarity of the starter and now its not turning the proper direction? Does anyone know whether the motor should turn clock wise or counterclockwise to start?

i would still be leary of a batt. that has been sitting all winter. Check the voltage at the starter when it it turning over. it should not drop below about 11 1/2 volts. Just because it is spinning fast can fool you.

i just used jumpers from my truck and still the same problem. I am now suspect of the starter itself as it did have water in it. I just wish I knew how fast if fast enough to get the bendix to rise.

Check its rotation. Viewed from the top it should rotate couter-clockwise.
