hi, my friend has a 1986 chrysler outboard 140hp, the distributer moves with the thottole but all the linkages were seized, now he needs to know the timing as there appears to be more than one mark, im not a boat mechanic so sorry if this does not make much sence, thanks Nick

Re: 140hp chrysler outboard

First off, if it has a distributor it is earlier than 1982. Second-- timing is set at wide open throttle to 32 degrees before top dead center. This engine can be static timed without starting it.

Remove the propeller and put the engine in gear. Push the handle to full forward. remove and ground the plugs. NOW: the top plug is #1 and is used to set timing. there will be several marks on the flywheel and they vary depending upon year. HOWEVER--looking at the engine there will be one mark on the flywheel and another several inches to the left. This is the 36 degree mark. With the ignition on turn the flywheel slowly by hand until #1 plug sparks. In the front of the block above the top carb is the pointer plate. See where the flywheel line is in relation to the pointer line. IF the pointer has one long line and several shorter lines, the long line is 36 and four lines to the left is 32 degrees. If the pointer has only one line (flywheels with a decal) that line is still 36 degrees and the flywheel decal is marked in degrees. Timing is changed by screwing in or out the threaded link on the distributor body. Moving the two plastic blocks together retards the timing and moving them apart advances timing.
