15 HP Evenrude - Year Model?

I have a 15 HP Evenrude and it is missing the Model serial number tag. Original paint in the holes so it looks like it never had one.

After reading the posts here I checked for the number on the plug which was located on the top of the motor block. The number is C7194130 which does not seem to corrispond to the model serial numbers I have seen listed in other posts.

The motor has a label on the cowling indicating that the mix ratio is 100/1. Which should indicate that it is a newer vintage motor. I orginally thought that it was a 70's vintage but a friends 70's vintage 9.9 which looks the same is run at 50/1.

Need the year/model to get water pump parts and for future reference.

Re: 15 HP Evenrude - Year Model?

Short of starting to dismantle the motor I have looked everywhere that I can think of for a model number that looks like the ones listed. The only thing that I can find that is not a casting number is the C7194130 which is stamped into the frost plug on the top of the engine block.

Any idea as to were else I can look for a model number hidden on this unit. I will start to take things apart to find it if necessary.

Sounds like your out of luck on getting a 'for sure' model number. However, the C719zzzz serial number _seems_ to indicate the engine was a canadian model built around/after 1985:
C711zzzz - 1981
C715zzzz - 1982
C717zzzz - 1984
C717zzzz - 1985
C721zzzz - 1987
If the 100:1 tag is factory original, it would support this. OMC only recommended that mixture for a few years in the late 80's, and later took it back to 50:1. Most here would reccomend you do the same.
Sorry I can't be more definite for you. Take all the information above with a big grain of salt - if it doesn't seem right, it probably isn't.
Hope this helps!

Re: 15 HP Evenrude - Year Model?

With this information it looks like I have a 1985 86 vintage motor which seems about right based on the age of my buddy's. The 100/1 ratio is a factory original tag and while I have not been running it at 50/1 I definitly run it at a richer than 100/1. I will try switching to 50/1 next year.

On the assumption that this motor is a 1985/86 model and the exact model number can not be determined based on the serial number what model numbers for Canadian production where there during this time period. I can pick one and use it for ordering parts with the knowledge that I may get the wrong thing. Can't be to many different models out there for each year. The motor is a tiller handle, regular shaft motor so as I said nothing special.

The help has been great so far.

Pike,

Also from 1985-89 OMC recommended a 100:1 mix and resended back to 50:1 after that because of engines run at WOT would seize because of lack of lubrication for sustained periods. Yours should definitely be run at 50:1...

Here's a site for you to check out, on maintenance of your motor.
http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm

Re: 15 HP Evenrude - Year Model?

Thanks for the link to the site it provided much of the background and information that I need including some part numbers that I hope to make use of. Based on the Ignition module type it looks like and pervious information on this forum that I have an 1986 Canadian Model 15 hp Motor.

Now does anyone know if there is a difference between the Canadian models and US models. Does anyone have a model munber for a 1986 15 HP motor which I could use in future to order parts? If there is differences then I would need a Canadian model number.

Thanks again

The only difference I ever saw between a Canadian and American Johnny/Rude was the French on the Canadian labels...

Re: 15 HP Evenrude - Year Model?

Just want to thank everyone. This should be all I need to be able to carry on from here and to order parts as needed.

Its very much winter here now and my lake travel is changing from boat to snowmachine but now I can be ready for next spring. I have a couple of antique machines and I will be back with more questions and to pass on my own experience if it is of use.

Once again thanks to all
