15 hp Mariner ID, year?

I bought a 15' Meyers aluminum boat with a 15 hp Mariner outboard a couple of weeks ago. I bent the prop shaft and damaged the prop while running into a shallow area in the river. I'm hoping to find out more about this motor before I order parts. The guy I bought it from did not know the year. He just said it had been sitting in his basement for 8 years. It says "made in Japan" on the side, and this is the info on the plate 15M 684 CS 019765. I heard Mariner motors where either a Mercury or Yamaha sold under the Mariner name. Since it says "made in Japan," I would guess mine is Yamaha. Aren't Mercury's made in Wisconsin?

Also, what is a good place to order parts for this motor? I don't mind ordering online, but customer service can be a benefit at some local places. There is a West Marine nearby and Bay Outboards (Saginaw, MI) and a few other local marina/stores.

since you live in the Bay City area there is ton of good boat shops in the area. I would talk to friends and find out where they GO for service.
Bent propshaft? yikes. and pricey. Do some homework in you area.

From my initial google searches it looks like it is about $170-200 just for the prop shaft. I have a good mechanic who does stuff like this on the side for reasonable prices, so I just need the parts.

Before you start spending money on a prop shaft and the other parts, make sure you do a run out check on the shaft and determine if it is salvageable.

Thank you very much for that info. I guess I don't know what a run out check involves. I thought a prop shaft was pretty much toast once it is bent. Can they be bent back?

Prop shafts can be straightened but it will depend on how much it is out of round and if you have a machine shop that can/will do it.

Presumably you have enough visible wobble in the shaft to lead you to think it is bent. Is the LU off the engine at present? You can do a rough check with a dial indicator on the shaft but as the bearings may be damaged, the only true way is to tear it apart and put the shaft in a set of V blocks and measure it with a dial indicator.

You can easily see that it is bent with the naked eye. I don't think there is much need to confirm that with measurements. The engine is still all together. My mechanic is going to take it apart and see what parts I need. I am assuming I will need a few seals, gaskets, and maybe bearings to complete the job.

If it is seriously bent, make sure that when you get it apart you do a close examination of the gearcase opening for cracks as well as the ears on the bearing carrier.

If you don't see any visible cracks, ti will be adviseable to do a pressure check of the LU once you have re-assembled it.

Okay, I got the outboard repaired. I now have a new propshaft, driveshaft (splines where very twisted) and new impellar and associated seals. I take it out on the river a couple days ago and I notice I have a new problem. The part where the tiller handle connects is broken. I guess I need an aluminum welder. It looks like the previous owner had fixed it before by adding the small steel plate and a couple screws. To bad I didn't notice it when I bought the boat.
