Consume all fuel inside carb bowl or drain it with side screw after use before " baging" it if you haven't done so, Probably that oldie is beginning to rot..

You could put a box of baking soda in the bag.

Are you talking about your actual house, or the garage? I won't put any gas powered equipment inside any house. Those fumes you are smelling are not good for anybody to be constantly smelling and under the correct conditions can be explosive as well. Find a better secure place to keep your engine if it is actually in your house... Your and your family's heath has to come first...period! :faint2:

I dont think the OP meant that the engine had gas in it. Nobody keeps gas in the house. I think he is referring to how it smells once he drains it and stores it in a bag

The engine stopped smelling a day after. It was sealed in heavy duty garbage bags. The engine was drained, I have nowhere else to put it. I don't have a garage because I live in an apartment. Based on a forum I read said it was fine as long as the area is ventilated. But I plan on renting some space somewhere to store it. Garage in NYC is one of the mist luxurious things u can have where the smallest housing is grossing over 400,000 dollars

If you want to live a normal lifestyle - car, bicycles, small boat - you pay price in NYC. And even without toys too. I commiserate.

That said - you don't remnant gas vapors in the house. Too bad you can't chain it up in a alley, or air space between buildings. Life in NY can literally STINK. :)

Re: 15 Hp outboard stinking my house up

The tank I have is a 3.2g. Right now has about 1g in it. I made sure all the openings are tight. Bought ad heavy duty black bags as I can get from lowes, construction grade. Put it into one bag tied it. Put it into second bag tied it and duct taped the knot after that just put it in a little storage area. I have in my hall way and I can't even smell it even if I put my nose on the bag. The engine is a different story, I have it on a standing mount with a garbage bag over the lower unit. And a towel over the top. Right now u only get little whiffs of it when you pass by it but I think it's because there is gas in the carbs and I haven't found out how to drain it yet or where the screw to drain it is located. Once I do that. I will bag the engine from top and bottom then make holes to pull the mounts through and if I still get whiffs ill drop a box of banking soda in it and call it a day until I find an outside place to store it.

Do you have a balcony to store the gas on?
In trueth I found that you are better of just buying gas as you go. That way there is no storage concern. All you don't use for a particular outing you can poor in your car gas tank

Yep get gas as you go is my best bet but I cannot put gas mixed with oil in my car, don't want to clog up my fuel injectors

Hey Weimed, We are Brothers in PVC, lol. I too am an apartment dweller, Brooklyn no less. With a 15hp Johnson and both a Quicksilver 340 sport and newly purchased Saturn 365 in my Hall closets!! I am fortunate enough to have a garage in my bldg.. I have the misfortune of having to pay for a car space anyway, so the super doesn't say anything about the 6 gal fuel tank that is stored there. It actually came in quite handy for Sandy! I presume you launch in Jamaica Bay?? If not, what other interesting places have you found to launch from??
