150 hole shot sluggish

I have just bought a 1999 Sprint 18'3" With a 1985 150 Merc. It has runs great on plane and idles great but boggs very bad on holeshot. Once you get past the bogg down it comes out of the hole great. Thanks for any help

If by "bogging", you meen it is sluggish getting up on plane, thats probably normal for your current setup. If however the engine is loading up and actually dieing out, then you have other issues.<br /><br />Providing the engine is running right, you can improve holeshot by changing pitchs on the prop, adding ventilation holes to the prop, adding tabs, etc.<br /><br />Give us some #s to work with. Current WOT RPMs, MPH, Current prop pitch, etc.

WOT == wide open trottle, I just had the same problem with mine and it turns out that the carbs were lean. I opened them all 1/4 turn and it fixed the problem

Dube<br />I don't know what kind of numbers you are looking for. I just purchased the boat and have only had it on the water once for about 15 minutes. It will actually die out on hole shot if you stay in the throttle. Once it catches up with itsself it runs in excess of 65 mph top end, I think it is about 58 to 60 mph at 5000 rpm. A boat tech told me Merc's where bad about loading up if the exhaust port is under water. He seem to think this is the problem. Do you agree?

Are you sure you have good fresh fuel? That can definatly cause the symtoms you are experiencing.

That is a good point. I think the previous owner told me the gas was 6 monts old. If that is the case can I add an additive and finish off the tank and not do harm?

after you get rid of the old gas, you might wanna try adding a can a seafoam to the next 5 gal's that you add. I have a V150 that had a mild bog (no stall or anything, just a noticable bog if you tried to accelerate quickly). A decarb (with deep creap) and running seafoam through it completely cured it. I take it to mean that the carbs had some varnish buildup and were a tad lean at idle. Easiest fix I've ever done!<br /><br />Brent

Brent<br /><br />I've got the same problem with my v6 150. Just seems a little lazy out of the hole and stumbles but once past 3000 rpm its fine. I've got the Merc decarb in a can but havent used it yet! Who makes the sea foam that you are talking about?<br /><br />Greg
