i have a 1995 javelin with a 150 johnson and a raker prop. the boat pulls hard to the right all of the time. i have put a trim tab on that had been broke off. it is turned all the way to the right. i have installed a plate on the skeg that suppose to help. the boat steers hard to the right all of the time. i was told that the boat has a power prop on it. it runs about 56. i really do not know the rpm because i have only had it at that speed once. i am one of these guys that just wants to run about 30 mph. the boat is always pulling to the right. by the way it is a 18ft. it has a raker prop with no markings of what pitch. could i get some good advice of what size and pitch should be on the boat? the boat is like a brand new boat and the engine runs well, it just steers hard. please help with any suggestions!!!!!!!:'(

Convert it to hydraulic steering. It will still be hard to turn in one direction, against engine torque, but when you stop turning the wheel it locks in that position so you don't have to constantly fight it. As soon as you move the wheel it automatically unlocks to steer, then locks again.

Re: 150 johnson steering problems

The right hand torque is due to a combination of several things. We'd have to know more about the boat and the set up to know where to begin. Once we get into it and the torque is neutralized you'll pick up a couple mph.

Start with the type boat and the set up. Jackplate? How high is the motor? Is it always pulling right -- even at negative trim or only at max positive trim? You should be able to find a spot in the trim range that the torque is neutral but more positive trim is needed to run faster.

BTW -- there is no such thing as a "power prop".
