i have an 82 150hp mercury outboard, when i first got it it idled really rough but when in gear it runs fine. i put some fuel cleaner in it and changed the spark plugs it ran fine for about 2 days till i was going down the river doing 30mph and stopped running now when it starts it runs for about 20 secs. after a while of trying it starts and idles fine. when in gear it won't go above 15mph it dies. when trying to start, shouldn't it spit water out?

First thang iz to decide if the problem is fuel or ignition related and fuel is easiest. Have you tried choking it or pumping the bulb to see if that helps or not? If you haven't, give that a try. Another thing is get a squirt bottle, put some premix in it and give the carbs a shot of fuel and see if the engine wants to pick and run or not. Play around with getting fuel into the engine and see what (if any) difference it makes. If it doesn't respond to that, then we'll start lookin' at ignition stuff.

c/6

Hooty

It sounds as though you have a clogged fuel/water filter or maybe full of water. (It burns the fuel on top of the water, then stops or slows down as it tries to suck more fuel into the filter). Hooty's idea with the spray bottle will let you know pretty fast wheter it is a fuel problem or not, just be careful of a spark or back fire.

i now have gotten it towhere it will idle a little just as long as i have a little but of throttle on but not in gear. i have checked compression and it is reading at about 140psi should it be higher? i also have checked the firing again just to make sure and it fires real good. any other suggestions would help thanks
