15HP 4-Stroke Suzuki -- 3 Questions from a Newbie!

We just bought a 14-foot jon boat with a 1999 15 HP 4-stroke Suzuki and are having 2 issues I'm hoping someone can help with:

1. The motor pops up out of the water when put in reverse.

2. The motor shuts off in neutral unless it's being revved. Can't idle or go slow without it shutting off either.

3. Just tonite, my son put regular 10W-30 oil in the motor without realizing that we need to get special marine 4-stroke oil for it. Do we need to drain it and start over before using it again?

We're new at this. Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have a lever on your motor? If so you can lock the motor so it doesnt tilt forward when putting it in reverse.

Check you plugs for question number 2, Also drain your float bowls there might be water in your bowls. The recommended oil for 4 stroke is 10W40, I would drain the oil and do it again. Somebody might tell you different but thats what I would do.

1. Your motor should have a reverse lockout lever on the bracket that connects the motor to the transom, check its position. If the reverse does not lock in either position, you are likely missing hardware or springs underneath the steering tube. I've actually seen this quite a few times.

2. The plugs are a good place to start, but the most common no idle problems with this model are improper idle screw adjustment or a clogged idle circuit in the engine's carburetor.
The idle is adjusted by a small phillip's head screw on top of the carb- turning clockwise increases idle RPM, counterclockwise decreases RPM.
The carb idle circuit can be cleaned only by tearing down the carb and cleaning with spray cleaner/ power tune. This can be intimidating at first, but is really relatively simple fix, your local shop would probably do it for less than $100.

3. Suzuki recommends 10w40 marine outboard oil in this model for most conditions and temperatures. This model holds very little oil, so it would be worth it to drain and change.
