I have a 1992/93 Gamefisher made by Mercury. After setting over 6 to 7 hours it will not start without a shot of starting fluid. After that first shot it will restart all all day long and runs good. Just put in a new carb kit and it made no difference. What do I need to take another look at?

Alright, how long have you been using starting fluid to start the engine? Starting fluid has no oil, and will remove oil from everything it touches,(considering it flows over the crank, connecting rods, bearings, etc.)therefore when you start the engine it's probably doing a little bit of damage at a time until it lubes up. I would replace the plugs, check compression and so forth. If you have to spray it to start it use a spray bottle with with a gas oil mixture, that way you get some lube in there. Someone with alot more experience can probably help you more with the starting issue.

I had a similar problem with my 1997 Force 15 hp. once it ran it would start fine for up to 3 days ... after that NADA. (gas inside would evaporate)

I"ll skip some frustrating trial and errors .. but here what the scoop was:

Some of these 15 hp Force/Gamefisher (by merc) have been mounted with the carburator choke closing trap (clapets) that came from the 9.9 Hp model.

The 9.9 Hp carburator intake choke closing clapets have air openings ... the 15 hp NOT (100% fully closed). Simply take the hood off, close choke and look inside the carb opening. If the clapet has openings letting air in while choke is closed ... you have the same problem as I had.

Solution: have small metal parts welded on top of air holes in clapet. It will then start on first or second pull .. forever ... LOL

The choke plate in this carb. is only a half plate. It does not extend above the swivel rod more than a fraction of a inch, if that much.

My 7.5HP Gamefisher (detuned 15HP) is the same way, only 1/2 a choke plate. I've never had too many problems starting it, pump the fuel line bulb until the carb is full, close the choke, shift to neutral, move throttle to max warm-up speed, push the primer button a couple times and let it rip. The most I've had to pull was 3-4 times, unless something wasn't set correctly, usually fires in the 1st-2nd pull. The only problem I've found is not having the throttle opened up to max warm-up, mine won't start if it's at idle, unless it's warmed up.

You might check the primer bulb (mounted on the case side) to see if it's cracked and not working, loose hose. From what I remember, when you push the primer you should see fuel shoot into the carb, if the throttle is opened up so you can see into the carb all the way.

(oh yeah, starting fluid is BAD)

Re: 15hp Gamefisher by mercury

I presumed a 15hp Gamefisher by mercury would be the same as a 15hp Force by mercury, both being ex Chryslers. As per the microfiche I have seen from a Force OB catalog ... the choke plate shows to be a FULL plate. As per my last post ... my OB did not start with the half plate. I you want to run a test ... when your motor does not start with choke ON ... put your finger on the open part of the choke plate and pull the crank & see if it starts this way .... if it does (like mine did) than you know what the problem is ... LOL

I think they are. My Gamefisher has a Merc sticker under the cowl, but I've looked up parts for it by referencing Force outboards.

Chrysler (AKA) Force (AKA) Gamefisher (AKA) Mercury  Not to be confused with a real Mercury or in the later years (AKA) Tohatsu :D
