15hp Johnson - does this look right?

I noticed this cord routed past the aluminium pillar - rubbed a groove in the pillar and creating a lot of 'fluff' as the rope wears - can't understand why the exit hole isn't in line with the recoil drum - surely it's going to wear the rope prematurely? or am I missing something..

I would agree that something is missing. What year is it?

If you haven't already...check out "The Machinist". A lot of information on your engine:

http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/OMC/OMC info.htm

Maybe once the year is known we can check out parts diagrams to see if some part has been mis-placed.

hi - its a '78 15hp I'll look on the online parts fiches but I couldn'r see anything before. Those articles by the machinist gave me the idea of getting this motor to restore - really helpfull.

I just got a picture of it - its just a very veryshort flared tube, flares inside the lower tray and outside to take away the hard edge I guess

I may have been thinking along the same lines as boobie. See pic.

Seems to me you're missing a part...or you've got too much rope spooled???

I'll check these things tomorrow, but there isn't anything I can see on the parts diagrams for that area, problem is it's usually hidden by the air cleaner in other photos
it's baffling

hi.

rope start should go as red line,
part no 2 is safty gear stop, when you put forward gear and advence trotle, this part rise and press down rope start the and of this part no 2 is fited in rope spool, hooking one of nothes end so you cant pull rope start(spool and rope are blocked),

i removed this safty, part no 1 is easy to remove, for me its easier to operate without this safety lock

Aha, well that would certainly do it... so the cord is supposed to be threaded through the hole in the black piece? Certainly doesn't look right where it is...

In this pic from a manual, the rope doesn't look like it is threaded through the black interlock.

I've had a play around to see if I could make sense of the route, and have included three options A,B and C - still no solution!

Judging from the fraying on your rope in pic 5 above, I'd tend to agree with you that you were better off with the original routing.

Try:
1. Measure rope as best you can to make sure that you don't have much more than 72" spooled (Mas mentioned above).
2. Try what is explained in the pic below

For what it's worth, I have the same motor and mine has been that way (original pic) for the 20 years I owned the motor. Same rope too.

That's the way it functions. Yes, it rubs the starter interlock bracket. The bracket comes polished in that area - not the other way around.

That's likely a 30 year old rope and it's fine. The design was changed on later models.

I've seen a ton of them missing the bracket as it's off with qty2-7/16"head bolts and can make life easier for many fisherman and mechanics.

Enjoy your motor.

Thanks all - I won't mess with it then. I think I'll also leave that bracket in place for the moment to avoid any mishaps - maybe when I get really familiar with the start up proceedure I'll take it off.

Thanks again for all of the contributions!

Re: 15hp Johnson - does this look right?

the rope was right to start with. The rope has to rub there to keep it inside the spool. Sorry if I did not anticipate this question on my "Ramblings". I have now added a clearer photo. I have seen a few of the aluminum bushings that go thru the front of the cowling worn thru however.

"Without question" the "Ramblings" is incredible. Just to add input here, I have had a ton of then come through the shop without the "Starter Interlock Bracket" and none that I can recall that skipped the spool.
