Re: 16' aluminum sylvan sportster project!

I'm going to try to keep up with costs and
paint stripper and plastic -$75
zincrom primer 6 cans -$60
benjamin moore 2 part epoxy paint -$80
benjamin moore 2 part urethane paint-$100
paint supplies( rollers, brushes,etc.) -$75
sand paper -$25
solvents -$50
rivets -$50
-?

Did you just strip the whole thing with the "dizzy goo"? I did the inside of the H-Day but the hull seems daunting - mainly because I have not figured out how to flip the beast - I am getting a blasting quote from a local guy...

Did you flip it to do the bottom?

I used aircraft stripper and yes I flipped it over to do the bottom.
I also plan on flipping it when I paint it. Mine is easy to get on and off because of the roller trailer and it doesn't weigh much so I can flip it by myself.

Thanks - I might just get the kids soccer team over to flip it!

Want to concur with Bob-VT about amount of gluvit. My 15 foot Jet took just 2/3 the small "1 qt" can. And doing the tipping of the boat for each side is a good idea. In about an hour it will begin gelling to much to be of any use. Did mine in two stages (truth, I ran out of stuff before I finished and waited for curing of first app. before finishing). In my experience it will take more than 24 hours for it to cure well enough to not be sticky at about 65 degrees. And like they say on the can it is corrosive. I did mine outside and still believe that breathing the fumes affected my mouth. Have not seen anybody else mention that and one person said he detected no fumes at all. May be it was because I was under a closed in bow with areas needing the Gluvit for about 20 minutes. My garage had an odor for a few days after application. I painted some small corrosion spots with it as well.

Be careful not to clog your drain holes (timbers) with Gluvit. It will run a bit. Tipping may eliminate that concern.

Looks like you are doing it right. Great project.

Re: 16' aluminum sylvan sportster project!

Got my rivets set on the sides where the rub rails were. It wasn't too bad of a job, it took about 2 hours total including practicing on some spare aluminum.
The results look like it came that way from the factory. I ended up useing
3/16 an470 solid aluminum soft rivets made from 1100 series aluminum since I
didn't know how hard the hardened rivets would be to set. It only cost me
$13.00 for .25lbs of rivets, about 100, plus a rivet set and shipping. I'm going to set any loose ones I find tomorrow then I should be ready to paint Tues.
if my paint comes in. I'll post more pics once I finish the painting.

Well the place I ordered my paint through kept making promises and excuses
when the paint wasn't there so I went with another vendor and used benjanmin moore p22 @ $32.00/gal. Here are some pics.

Where did you get your rivets, and what kind were they?

Thanks

Looking good... great color choice!

I bought the rivets from aircraft spuce. 3/16'' an470 7/16'' long but 5/16'' would have worked better I ended up trimming the rivets down for several spots. The formula for picking rivet length is material thickness + 1.5X rivet
diameter. Don't forget you'll need an air hammer and rivet set plus a heavy metal object for the other side. The rivets I used are not a perfect match
I think mine are modified brazier head solid rivets and I used the an470's which are universal rivets.
edit: The above formula is for solid rivets only.

Bryan the paint looks fantastic your doing a great job. Theres times when I wish I had sprayed mine but its such a pain to set up a temporary booth in my garage for such a large object I did the roll and roll option. I am happy with mine but know there would have been less orange peel to deal with if I had sprayed it .

Re: 16' aluminum sylvan sportster project! new pics 11-12

thanks for the positive comments guys. I tried roll and roll, roll and tip and neither one would lay down the paint the way I wanted so I bought a cheap
gravity feed spray gun and inline water filter for $55 and ended up with a good finish. The thing with this paint is you have to lay it down very wet almost to the point of it running to get a good gloss. The orange peel on the
boat is about the same as our cars maybe a little better. I added 20% urethane hardener to the paint and it is very hard to scratch on my test piece
thats cured for a week compared to the paint by itself which can be scratched pretty easily with your finger nail. Here's some pics of the cured film after 24hrs. I lost some gloss but it still looks good to me.

Looks amazing! I'm going with a similar scheme on mine. Same blue but a lighter gray. Now I'm really excited to get painting.

ezmobee Thanks but if my paint looked like what yours does on your project
I would probably leave it alone considering the amount of work involved.

Bryan, i wanted to bring the topic of gluvit back up, seeing as how i didnt see any reponse from you...

from what i understand you were going to use gluvit not only to seal the hull but to coat the deck and transom? i wouldnt do that. its a waste of money. use the gluvit to seal the hull and use epoxy or poly on the transom and deck.

Ugh, who paints a boat burgundy and charcoal? And it does have numerous deep scratches. At least it will be a good base for the new paint.

Can't wait to see yours all finished. It's going to be really sharp.
