Hi guys neat sub forum! I have a 50 hp honda outboard and was wanting to put it on a 16 ft star craft jupiter(freebie) until I can afford a decent utility type skiff. I will have a heavy load of 200-350lbs of ice and fish at times so was making sure I do not have a dog of a motor.

If it works maybe I can convert into a more practical utility skiff who knows. I do lightweight commercial fishing if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

Hey man.... welcome! 50 on a Jup ---- mmmmm... well you're not going to win any races, but given that you do lightweight commercial fishing, that prolly isn't you're first priority anyways! It will move it along --- my guess with the load you are speaking of and assuming there are 1 or 2 passengers max --- in the mid to high 20's. It will plane out reasonably well. Jupiter is a great boat ---- worth keeping and fixing up... but I'm probably biased in this regard! :)

Ideally, a 70+ hp works best --- but again, you're not trying to pull waterskier's or loading it up with 4 or 5 big guys.

Post some pics if you get a chance!

I think a newer 4 stroke 50 will move her into the low 30's maybe. A Jup is a slightly heavier, wider and deeper than my Nassau with the old Merc 50 and it runs at 32.

Thanks so much for your replies! I guess I counted the eggs before they hatched. The owner of the boat changed his mind recently and decided to make his own plans with it! That said I have a new respect for these underrated Starcraft boats after reading up on old posts, and will consider owning one again if the deal comes up. Well I better find a way to vent off some steam!
