165 mercruiser pre alpha

engine started running rough and then made a grinding sound and quit. an attemp to restart was un succesfull. it appeared that the engine was siezed.
we waited for a while and then she fired up and ran smooth. there was a strange grinding sound comming from the stern area. no water in the oil and temp. was in the green. 160 or so. gimble bearing? or maybe the gears in the top of the leg? i have a spare leg to put on in any event. any idea`s out there?

Ayuh,... Drain some oil from the drive,+ Look for water or Metal....
Pull the drive,+ Check the gimbel bearing, u-joints, etc..
