Any one own one of these ? I picked one up today and would like to know some more info on them. If anyone has any info feel free to chime in.

It has a 4 cyl chrystler 2 stroke I/O engine. I think it mixes the oil and gas for you?

How do you test the motor when its out of the water? Any help would be verry appreciated. IM a total dip when it comes to this. Never had a I/O

And im hoping it floats. ( god i hope! ) Is there a way to tell if its taking on water anywhere? Theres one patch job on the front right tri hull part. Just dont want it to leek. Dont know how good they patched it ?
Hey it was free right?

Pics of boats and parts help alot!

I'm responding, mostly so that you post doesn't fall off the first page. Free is a good deal to me. If it's an i/o, unless there was some motor I'm not aware of, will be a 4 stroke like a car engine. Try to post some pics so people can help you out. Good luck with it.

I don`t think Chrystler made inboards, so it`s maybe an outboard? Some picks would be nice, we love to look at the old boats (Chrystler no longer exists officially, my buddy has one on his wooden boat).

Re: 17' OMC Deluxe Questions.

Chrysler made inboards, but they were never mated to OMC hulls (that I know of). OMC typically used their own products or a GM sourced automotive engine. The only 2-strokes they ever paired as an inboard/outboard were V4 outboard powerheads, laid horizontally and mated to an OMC sterndrive. They only made those for a few years in the 1960s.

Now that's a wealth of information I did not know. Hehe...I gotta do my research! I'd love to set my eyes on that inboard, it must be a real oddity to look at.

That's a neat looking boat. I say use it if it runs until it breaks, and then part it out. I doubt You're going to find parts for that engine, since even the regular chrysler outboard parts are getting hard to come by. Of course if you do your homework you will probably find that it is just a regular outboard engine laid on its side, and may be able to find parts that way.

I'd say that sucker is worth restoring. It may never be worth a tonne, but it is certainly original..and would really turn heads on the lake. Nice find.

Re: 17' OMC Deluxe Questions.

Can i run the tilt trim with the engine off?

Can i put a pair of muffs on the lower unit or will it ruin the engine? I dont even know if theres a spot to do it?

How to hook up a hose if possible ?

IN the pic theres some wireing next to the engine head on left . Behind the wires these a spot where there should be a float bowl? Am i right?

Thanks

Re: 17' OMC Deluxe Questions.

You should safetly be able to tilt the drive with the engine not running. As far as cooling, normal muffs won't work on your drive, but there is probably an adaptor made for yours, check ebay. If not, tilt the drive up and put a large bucket or trashcan underneath and fill with water up a few inches past the inlet holes.
That boat will definitly be an eye catcher! especially if you restore it to original condition

Re: 17' OMC Deluxe Questions.

It is definitely a 1960's era J&E V4 crossflow gashog! Never seen that installation before but the powerhead is easily identifiable. Look for the quarter-sized, aluminum disk on one side of the powerhead to find the model number and post it. That info will be important to getting it up and running.

The ignition is probably the dual points, automotive-type distributor without any electronics. Cannot tell from the photos but my guess is the distributor is driven by the same cogged-belt as the outboards of this design. The OEM belts are getting very rare and I don't know of any aftermarket supplier producing them. Another member may have some info on that situation.

The OMC outdrive, in addition to being an obsolete unit with very little parts and service support available, also appears to me to have the early electric shift gearcase. I had that option on a 1962 Johnson 75HP and really liked the way it operated. However, that also is another potential problem area for you because if it does not work now, you are looking at some significant money for the control switch, shift solenoids, etc., if you can even find them.

Finally, in response to your question about the "float bowl" being missing from the picture, I think you are referring to the glass, sight bowl on the fuel pump located just above the starter. If so, yes, it does appear to be missing. Look around in the bilge, it might be rolling around somewhere. This part might be the easiest to find of all the challenges you face.

The experts on this forum, which I am NOT, can help with any problems you face with this project. Good luck!

No, I don't believe it mixes the fuel and oil for you. I'm pretty sure you have to mix it in the tank. As others have said, it's not a Chrysler engine at all. It's an OMC, pretty much the same as the V-4 outboards. They didn't have automatic oil injection then for the outboards, so I'm sure they didn't for that I/O.

Good luck with this.

Re: 17' OMC Deluxe Questions.

Ok i did a serch this moring and found out that It is a omc motor Probly THe 120 hp. Chrystler did make the engines for these boats but a few years earlier. Chryster was a straight 4 Omc had a V-4.

There was a premix for this boat. Option was there before being made for outboards. There is a oil tank with cap on top deck. Mine looks like the oil pump is missing or somthing.... More research....

The tilt selinoids are ok I think i might have to remove the motor any try to free it. When i would try and put direct current through it it would just go Tink ( the motor not selinoid.)

The brushes might be stuck ?? Or need new ones. ??

What do you guys think?
