I just rebuilt my evinrude 175 and took it to the lake to run it. Mixed my gas 50 to 1, kept rpm under 4000 to do break in. Stayed near boat ramp and ran large circles and back and forth in front of ramp in case I had problems. After about the first 2 miles the engine went dead but cranked back up. This happened several times. sometimes I could go for awhile and sometimes it would die right after re-cranking it. Boat came up on plane easily, motor is pushing a Ranger 481, 19 foot boat. This is very similar to the way it ran just before the motor blew to begin with. I had changed the powerpack ( OIS 2000) and also changed the fuel line and added a spin on oil water filter in addition to the rebuild. Checked compression when I got home and had 95 pounds on 5 cylinders and 90 on the 6th one. Motor was strong during the runs until it just quit. Sometimes it would sputter a few times before quitting, sometimes it would just stop. I had made adjustments to the carb floats to match the book specs by bending the arms, don't know if that is the problem. Spark plugs were wet and oily. Should I check the optical sensor or does it sound like I might have water in the gas ? Please help.
