I inherited a 1978 175 HP Black Max from my father. The motor has less than 300 hours on it. It had not been cranked for about 10 years when I received it. I cleaned the carburetors, replaced the gaskets, replaced the stator and rectifier (wires in bad shape), and replaced the water pump impeller. I oiled the cylinders and then cranked the engine. It cranked on about the third try. I let it idle with water muffs. My question is, are these dependable engines and what is the best way to check it out before putting it into the water?

thanks,

Those are good motors if taken care of. You should change the oil in the L/U if you haven't done so yet. Other than that it sounds like you are ready for sea trials.
