i jsut bought a 18 ft boat, my second time out the drivers seat ripped out due to the floor being rotted out. The previous owner remounted the seat back and never filled the holes so water got in and rotted it out. My problem is I cut out all the rotted wood but now I still have some soaked ply fwd and aft of the affected area. should I jsut keep cutting until its dry or what, please guys help me out here.

Sounds like you would do better with a complete floor job. It would give you a chance to check the stringers as well. There alot of people here who have gone through the same project that would be glad to guide you through the entire chore.

And wecome to iboats, by the way.

I agree I would pull the entire floor up, check the stringers to see if they are rotted. If they are replace them if not put a new floor over them check the foam for waterlog if it has foam ect.

I am in between pulling the whole floor and doing that but I dont want to be down for too long. It just seems like the more I cut the more I find and its driving me crazy. Is it really a big deal if the plywood is just wet, meaning soaked. I think it goes all the way back to the strat of the engine compartment. Should I even dare to look at the other side?

Is it too late to cancel the transaction and give the boat back/get your money back? You might want to consider that. If you love the boat, then I'm with the other posters, love the boat, meaning do a complete and careful job getting her back into shape and you'll get lots of satisfaction from her in return. Do a so-so job, and you'll be hating the boat in no time at all.

I think you are okay. Sylvan is aluminum isn't it? I bet the stringers are aluminum too. Just replace the floor with a better quality plywood that you have sealed up. It will lend you the chance to re-design storage lockers and move things around. Once you are done it should last a long time.

Sylvan made both glass and aluminum boats. If it is aluminum like Bob said you don't need to worry about rotted stringers but the foam under the wood is probably saturated and will need replaced. It is MUCH easier to do the floor on an aluminum boat than glass!8)

If you haven't gotten rid of this boat, take heart. we had a similar experience. We removed all of the wooden floor and replaced it with 3/4" marine plywood, recarpeted & now have a great boat, great price. It looks and fishes like new.

Replace the soft plywood with marine grade plywood, cover it back up with carpet, run it for the summer and then SELL IT!

why are we beating a post from JULY, when the guy only posted back once, the day after the original post.

it's funny when some of them don't hear what they want . they just disappear into thin air. sounds like my kids.
