Had one of the old maroon 18's. One of the most dependable motors I ever owned. They must have had a good rep among thieves too because someone broke into my machinery shed about 15 years ago and stole it and left three other small motors

Almost bullet proof. Very simple to work on, a lot of the carb and ignition parts can be gotten through NAPA auto parts stores!

Just keep it off the rocks and it will run forever, almost. BTW just sold one last summer to upgrade to a 35hp. Evinrude.

Anything you can get from NAPA, you can get here at iboats. For less money. It's all Sierra Marine.

You are correct, though sometimes I just need parts in a hurry and it's also helping my local economy. Sorry, I know the store owner, thery're neighbors.

That's what I wanted to hear... "bulletproof?"

I'm just worried this motor may have some corrosion due to saltwater exposure. I've heard working on them can be "rather difficult".

What would be a good asking price for one in "fair" condition that is NOT running but has good compression? (What would be good comp for this HP motor? My 6HP was about 85psi or so.)

Agreed the saltwater may be an issue. Look very closely for signs of corrosion.

Price? Everything is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

The one I had I bought not running for $150.00, the seller was almost honest! Was told it needed the carb rebuilt, which it did but also had an issue with the shift fork. Rebuilt the carb and it fired right up. Needed a few linkage bushings replaced as well along with a few other adjustments. Found another parts motor for $50.00 and cannablized the lower from it. All toll about $250.00 invested.

On the Recoil start I was getting about 80# of compression. Motor ran great when all was said and done. If I was in need of another engine that size I'd be looking for another just like it.

good point about salt water motors. I had to let mine go all because all the bolts were frozen and no way to make an otherwise simple repair (replace a shift lever). Even got a parts motor, and even took them both to the old timer who could fix anything. If you can, see if you can wrench a couple of bolts loose. Otherwise, buy it if it's running and plan to dump it when it doesn't.
In other words, the "soft spot" is the pot metal it's made from.

Been around, and in use, for about 50 years and you want to know if it is reliable???

Well I bought it...

It is UGLY, lol!!

I bet there were 5lbs of cobwebs, mud dobber "nests" and dust on it... which I am still getting off.... looked like someone put oil or something on it before they put it in the corner and forgot about it.

110 / 112 PSI compression.

I've already got the flywheel off, and the original (blue) coils / points / plug wires look great.

The kill switch rubber and wires are beyond shot.

She's going to need a little paint on the motor and lower which I'm unsure about. There are a few parts in this motor that are new to me. (I'll ask over on one of the repair forums.)

Someone was running what smelled / felt like 90W gear oil in the lower, the level was low but there was no water / rust in the oil... I haven't dropped the lower yet... hoping with a little searching I can work my way through that.

I can't wait to bring her to life (and find something to put her on, lol!)

Sounds terrific! Lower is a snap to remove as is the waterpump impeller once it's down. Post a note when your're ready and I'll keep a look out for it!
