I Recently Bought A 1973 Esquire 14ft Boat With An Older 35hp Sea Horse On It. The Fellow I Bought It From Told Me That It Ran Just Fine. However ( I Know ) When He Put It In Forward And Began To Speed Up The Motor Would Stall And Die. I Will Get The Serial Numbers And A Photo Of This Together Soon. Just Thought Maybe Someone Might Be Able To Help. And Yes It Starts And Seems To Run Fine. Thanks Whiskey Bump. Probably Does Not Matter, But It Is Electric Start And Pull Start. This Thing Is Old.

Probably carb, but could be coils heating up.

if it has never had the coils replaced then they need replacing. a cracked coil may fire and run at an idle, but at higher rpms short out. I also agree it may be the carb as well, but you are wasting your time doing the carb until you look at the coils.

Go through the "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard" post/thread completely. You need to check everything on that motor out, not hard to do, and get it cleaned/updated and back into running condition. Bet your problem disappears after doing so, unless there is something really wrong inside. Those are great motors...very reliable and strong runners after you get them back into running shape.

Total BUNK!!!
OMC coils from the '50s are not always bad. I know somewhere out there must be a 50's coil that actually still works!;)

Like FreddyRay, I've been conditioned to going to the ignition first. There's just no point in starting elsewhere. Until you get GOOD spark, you're just giving yourself a headache looking for problems elsewhere.

THere's an FAQ on fixing 50's coils if you're interested.
I wish I had a '57 35hp!

on those i go for compression, before i do anything, then spark. if you don't have compression spark does you no good.

Certainly. They probably got replaced in the '60s.

I was going to say that Frank. I have never seen a 50's OMC with original coils still in there that are still good. earlier and later coils yes, but not mid to late 50's

i will send more pics soon. i only paid 250.oo for the boat trlr& motor, with all the standard stuff. old tanks metal. air and fuel leads. one with push button prime. it also has complete set of controls with ignition and such. i cannot remember the name on the controls but it is not something i am familar with. when i get back down to the coast i will write all of this down.

Looks like a '58 paint scheme on the cowl. Nice pics, WB.
That's a good looking motor.
Good luck,
JBJ
