Re: 1950's mark 25 restoration

Thanks Merc 850 - I got it. Tell me about your carb. Is it a usable unit or good for parts? Does it have the idle adj needle?
Thanks again

Re: 1950's mark 25 restoration

I took the motor apart from the lower segment and removed the throttle arm, carb and all linkage, I was nervous at first but actually wasn't that complicated. I have started the clean up part for paint and I found that the actual color was a very light grey/blue originally on the engine and I assume the Covers will be a mix of that and a darker blue.

One thing I need to know how to do is remove the distributor plate from the engine for further cleaning - cant figure it out.

Thanks

If you look on the underside of the armature plate you'll see a ring gear with threaded holes on the flat pads on either side. On the top side of the plate you'll see screws going through the plate into the pads. Loosen those screws and you should be able to pull the plates sandwiched between the pads and the plate outwards to release the plate from the boss on top of the crankcase.

Re: 1950's mark 25 restoration

Thanks Chinewalker - I got the armature plate off but it was a little stubborn. It was so greasy and dirty under there that I had to remove the advance gear completely along with the retaining plates. I am sure I will need help putting those retaining plates back in in the proper order. There are 2 plates on each side - one with arms and one is a square-ish shim. there is also a flat ring under the small flywheel on the crankshaft that fits in there somehow. Any way I will be able to really clean the block up now and soon will be repainting everything. (can't wait)

If Merc 850 is out there please let me know about the carb you have soon because I have located another one I can jump on if needed. Thanks

Some additional questions if anyone is up to them:
1. Can I make my own gaskets if I want?
2. Was the engine block, all linkages, shifter, driveshaft housing and lower unit painted all at one time at the factory? (including painting over all gaskets showing at seams and all nuts holding things together)
3. Was the carb painted also?
4. Was the flywheel painted?

Thats probably enough for now.
Thanks - You guys are a big help!

Gaskets - yes, you can make your own. I may have some scanned templates for some of them - will see if I still have them on the new computer. Thickness is fairly critical on some of them, particularly the crankcase to cylinder block - but it doesn't appear you're splitting the case so that shouldn't be an issue.

Paint - all painted bits on the core of the engine were done at once, save for the propeller.

Carb - not painted.

Flywheel - painted, but not same as rest of motor. Were either left as primer (greenish) or painted red on later ones. Also seen some that were left "natural" as yours appears to be. Can't really tell from your photos, though, for sure...

I found another carb just lying around, the needles are undamaged, the float is stuck. I will be home Tues with another one.

Hello Merc850,
The carbs look great - all I really need is a good idle adj. needle but would buy the whole carb assembly if you like. Let me know if you have a price in mind.
Thanks very much

How are your sound blankets? I am planning to reproduce Merc sound blankets-I did one for my 850 and it lowers the sound level by 30%.

On a scale of 1-10 my sound blankets are an 8. I think they are fully functional but showing wear where they line up with power head. Hottest area I guess.

Re: 1950's mark 25 restoration

I'm Back!! Finally got my lower unit welded and back home. I am in the middle of doing a test assembly of the lower unit. I can get it to engage forward then neutral and reverse. My question is, is the propeller shaft supposed to be able to move in and out a bit during shifting operations or should it not move in and out at all. When shifting my unit from reverse back to forward the shaft seems to have moved rearward a bit and doesn't move back forward and engage forward gear without a little coaxing.

Is there a list of parts in sequence from the shift dog to the propeller cone to be sure I am not missing any parts. I am sure the gearcase was apart before due the the cracked housing it came with.

Thanks for any help.

Dear beats I've just sent you some manual pages for the Mark 2 cyl and 4 cyl engines, don't worry, the components are similar just different sizes.
