Hi all,

I have a '53 Evinrude Lightwin 3hp.
Starter rope looks like it's as old as the motor. I'm planning on using the motor extensively this upcoming week and I would hate to have the rope snap on me, so I was going to replace it.
I'm just not sure exactly how the end of the rope is mounted into the starter.
Before I go taking it apart I thought I'd ask here incase I do something that makes the job more difficult to than it needs to be. 🙂

Thanks in advance,
JG

If you slowly pull the rope out, you should be able to see better how it is attached. Then you use C-clamp or something to hold the recoil in that position without winding back up and you disconnect the rope, cut a piece of rope the same length and slide it in the way the old one came out and then release the clamp and it will rewind up. Don't forget to put the handle on the new rope first or the whole thing will wind into the recoil starter.

That's good to know.
I suppose I'll leave it, but my curiosity also has me wondering how it is replaced.

Pull the cord.-----Lock the sheave.-----Remove rope.----Install new rope rope.----Let spring recoil and pull rope in.-----Adjust as needed.
