I have a 10hp Johnson 1954 model CD-11. With the new coils, points, condenser it starts and runs fine (in the garage).I'm running it in a garbage can, and I don't see any water coming out. The cylinders don't seem too hot (fingers for 5-6 seconds no problem). My questions are: Is it supposed to pee? Do I have to remove the power head to disconnect the shift linkage, to get the pump apart? That's what it looks like, and my manual is inconclusive. It's a sweet old motor, and I don't want to screw it up. Thanks.

Those motors did not have a tell tale and while I don't know your specific motor I think you are correct about the shift linkage. It is not a big deal unless bolts start breaking.

Is that a 10hp QD-11 or a 5.5hp CD-11?
Depends on which as to how you disconnect the shift linkage.

WHoops. you're right Paul, its a 5.5 I have a 10 with another problem and got them mixed up. So it isn't supposed to have a tell tale? I thought maybe something should be coming out of that "exhaust silencer" on the rear of the shaft housing. If I run it with headphones instead of in a pail, I suppose I should see water coming out with the exhaust down by the prop. Anyhow, thanks for the fast responses, guys!

I forgot to check your reply, so sorry for the delay!
You have to pull the powerhead to disconnect the shift linkage on the 5.5hp before you can get the lower unit off. You should get cooling water out of the hole in the back of the mid-section. 'Muffs' don't fit the 5.5hp (or the 10hp for that matter), and the flusher that did is no longer available. You'll have to run it in a bucket filled up to the seam between the midsection and the lower unit.
