1954 12hp sea king

have began messing with my old motor. Is it normal for it to be so hard to pull the rope on it? It seems very stiff but I've no idea if this is just on of it's quirks. also should I grease it anywhere?

Hi....

12 HP is a pretty good sized motor for its day...and the recoil starters used back then weren't famous for making things easy. Well; sort of easy compared to wrapping a rope around the flywheel I guess.

If your motor turns over smoothly and quietly with the spark plugs removed...then I think it just is what it is.

As for greasing things....anything that moves should have some lube on it. Throttle linkage, tilt mechanism and the like. The lower unit needs either grease or gear oil; I'm not sure which.

I got it to burp a couple times today but when I pulled off the fuel line a blob of crap came out of the line where it connects to the carb. tomorrow I plan on pulling the bowl and cleaning it out. how should the two knobs be set to start out with?

I don't consider them hard to pull. But my wife would never be able to pull it. I guess it depends on who you are. Lower unit takes 90 weight gear oil. Fuel mix is 16:1. High speed knob = 3/4 turn open from lightly seated. Slow speed knob = 1 1/2 turns.
