1954 Evinrude 7.5hp-Done?

I have the above motor. Run it on a 12' aluminum. Runs well. Starts easily. Good spark etc. etc.<br /><br />Put on a 5hp gamefisher. Boat goes a lot faster. <br /><br />Is my evinrude done? I like this old motor but if a newer 8 will make it fly...

Yup. It's shot. Send it to me and I will give it a decent burial.<br /><br />No. I lie.<br /><br />Your engine is sick. Probably running on one cylinder or only one making power. Do the cylinder-making-power test. It can be fixed.

I agree completely, unless the compression is way down it should beat the 5hp easily. A rather common problem is to loose spark under load, so as you throttle up you loose a cylinder. Often the weak cylinder will be able to jump a 1/16" gap no problem, but fail to jump a 1/4" gap.<br />A spark plug comparision made immediately after throttling down should show it too.
