My motor is not pumping water. I had it running fine last year and wanted to take it out for the first time this week. Put it in a barrel and started right up but no water coming out. I took the lower unit off thinking the impeller might have been bad but it looks fine. ( I replaced it last year). Put it back together making sure the water tube is going in correctly into the impeller housing. Still no water! What am I missing? Please help.

Could be a clogged intake by the prop. Check the mesh screen for obstructions. Maybe shoot a bit of compressed air through the water tube and make sure the water jacket isn't clogged. Drop the lowe and make sure the little pin in the drive shaft that turns the impeller is still present.

Just a thought or two.

Good luck!

Thanks gjonz. Pin is fine. Do you know how else you can do this without compressed air?

Your certain the water was deep enough in your barrel? It needs to be clear up to the lower mounts. I.o.w. it needs to be deep enough to submerge the water pump itself. not just the water intake.

Also you could use your garden hose with whatever adapters and hoses you need to make it fit and just plug it on to your water tube. Good luck!

Todd, I thought about that last night and I was so frustrated with it I couldn't sleep! I took the lower unit off for the 3rd time and shot water up the tube and water did come out where it was supposed to so at least I know that is working. I think you are probebly right that I don't have it in deep enough water although I do have it in water close to the mounts. I am going to take it to the river after work and see what it does. Thanks for your input.

Make sure the impeller is keyed to the driveshaft.

After you replace the impeller, the fins may require a few turns to flex into the correct position to pump water. If it's keyed with the driveshaft and the pin is in place...then all should be well.

As long as the water level is high enough.

I had a 1955 25 horse Johnson that did the same thing to me. I shot water up through the intake. Started pumping tons-o-water.

Let us know what happends please!

Good news, IT WORKS!. I just got back from a river run and it was pumping water like no tomorrow. In fact, after rebuilding the entire motor, I bet it ran just like when it was new. There is nothing like an Evinrude Big Twin at WOT! I have read post after post on this forum about not having a motor deep enough in a barrel to pump water and for some reason I couldn't get that through my thick head. I want to thank all of you guys for responding to my SOS. You all are great.

No need to remove the powerhead. Just remove the little oval plate on the side of the leg (held on by 2 screws) and disconnect the lower shift rod by completely removing the lower bolt in the coupler. Then remove the bolts which hold the lower unit on and she will drop right down.
