I have a 1955 Evinrude 25. You guys have been a great help in getting this motor running and I have used it a lot this summer. My question now is there is black sludge comming out from what looks like small grease fittings under the motor. At first I thought that it was old oil and sludge built up in the motor that just needed to run out, but it does it everytime I take it out. I know that oil and unspent fuel does leak out which is normal but I'm not quite sure what to make of this. Also, I can't find anything in my parts diagram or repair manual on what these fittings are or what they are supposed to do. I am running 24:1 gas/oil mixture. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm at work right now but when I get home I will try to get a picture of it.

I think you are looking at the grease fitting to the tower, or pivot shaft. Grease will weep out of here. Re-grease this fitting, as it is probably due.

Here are the pictures. If these are grease fittings, is it normal to see the black sludge come out of them? Do I need to shoot them full of grease and what kind of grease? Thanks again for the help.

They are grease fittings. The waterproof marine grease sold by the major outboard companies is wonderful stuff. Somebody around here says "any grease is better than no grease". I guess that about sums it up.
