So my question is why??

Guy too lazy to change seals? Would that work??

i mean it’s so packed I’m having a hard time cleaning it all off... also will adding the correct gear oil be problematic??

never worked in a motor that had actual bearings inside a carrier on the prop to this point. Do these need to be packed with grease like a trailer wheel bearing?? I had a 56 35 hp Johnson once but that only had roller bearings on the pinion gear

once I get this lower unit sealed up I can finally get to work on the ignition!!

I am not sure there was a 56 model 35 Johnson.-------If it was it would have had a tapered roller bearing for forward thrust.-----And a ball bearing just behind the reverse gear !!

Yep, somebody was too lazy or cheap to fix the leaks. I hate cleaning the grease out when they do that. Get out as much as you can and fill it with oil---after you fix the leaks.

Yes sorry it was a 57 Johnson 35 hp

ok sounds good. I’ve cleaned up most the grease now just gotta wait for ebay to send my new prop seal carrier. Mine was chipped right where the o ring sits
