Hello again everyone.

Another post involving the epic drama of my 1956 Evinrude big twin.

After reading thru additional posts from rapunzel in Oklahoma - on this terrific forum, I noticed a few things and was hoping to ?share? with the group ? again...

Question 1 ? my magneto plate has a part number 580210-1 and Rapunzels mag plate shows a part number of 580210-2.
His is a 1957 model and mine a 1956, no surprise ? but looking at pics, My mag plate assembly has a felt ?rub? that I dont see in the 1957 models magneto plate. Also, my ?cam? portion of my shaft looks better that the 1957. IF they ?upgraded? the 1957 to omit the felt rub, it seems to be a step backwards. Rapunzels pic (first one) shows Johnson red. Mine follow.

Q2: What is the purpose of this mark - shown at my index finger?

Thanks again in advance. Looking forward to your feedback.

I believe you will find that the magplates are the same.-The last digit may identify the diecast mould the part came out of in the factory for quality control purposes.--The felt lubricator was never left out by the factory , it was left out by somebody working on this motor.--------The mark on the cam has to do with the opening of the throttle plate.

Makes perfect sence about somebody leaving it out.

ANother question, - what is that nasty looking grease that is on the screws here. I saw it in the pics that Rapunzel posted and was curious.

Hi pro. Here are some handy links for rebuilding the magneto and tuning up the motor in general. The screws look ok to me. Probably just years of goop that's built up under the armature plate. Someone may have even put dielectric grease on them at some point. As long as there isn't any fuel/oil mix leaking from around the crankshaft you should be ok.

That basic 580210 armature plate was used on a multitude of different motors. They kept making minor changes to adapt it to something new. Every time they modified it, they changed the dash number. There also was D-1, D-2, etc. That just identified which of several dies it was cast in.

The "nasty grease" is OMC Type A, now obsolete. Use a good EP grease very sparingly on the retainer rings. Excess will just splatter off and foul the points. Sometimes OMC glopped the Type A on heavily and it liquefied and fouled the points too.

The ground wires on your black coils need to be re-positioned. They will rub on the flywheel hub and wear in two the way they are. Tuck them back as close to the coils as you can. The blue ones aren't much better.

There is a pointer on the intake manifold. When the mark on your brass cam aligns with that pointer, the carburetor throttle should be just ready to start opening.

Some of the real old wicks actually were foam rubbery stuff. They disintegrated. Can't always blame it on "somebody".

I guess " somebody " did not install a replacement felt.I believe factory point sets came with them.

When guys buy the aftermarket points they don't come with the new felt so leave them out and feel that all will be well. ;) I like the OEM points myself for quality.

As for synchronizing the carb with the ignition, the port screw hole will be oblong. This allows you to loosen it, and pull out or push in the cam, to sync it as Frank described. Don't adjust it so that the carb starts to open when the roller hits that mark, set it with the pointer as F_R stated. Also, ensure your choke is open when you do this or things wont work.

I am for sure - keeping this thread.
Great info.
That Type A grease - when I saw it in the pics of the Johnson - was a perfect match with what I was looking at on my motor.
Thanks again guys. Another Home Run.

F_R: The black coil pack pic was from the Johnson 35 that Rapunzel in Oklahoma has. But you have a good eye.

You wont find Type A anymore. Any EA type grease is fine. Just a thin film though, not too much! Put it on the rings, and along the moving parts all the way down to the tiller for smooth operation.
