Hi all this my first post. I have some questions about my 56 rude sportwin 10 i have been working on. First thing is i got the motor for free. The guy i got it from said it was seized but turns out it wasnt (awesome for me) it pulled hard at first but then got easier. Then no spark so i looked on here and figured out what to check and guess what coils condensers and points were all sorts of shot. I replaced them all and lets say spark like a lightning bolt. So i put a little fuel in the cylinders 2 pulls and pop it fired for a second (happy times). The motor didnt come with a presure tank so i found one on ebay the tank came and was in great shape. I got some fuel and made my mix hooked the tank up put the motor in a barrel of water primed it and 2 pulls it fired right up and i had it running for about 15 min (more happy times) till this.... I noticed oil forming in the barrel so i shut her down to check if all was ok i tilted the motor up and say that there was white foamy oil leaking from a pin hole above the rear of the lower unit in the back just slightly higher then the gear oil fill hole (and i did change the LU oil) it smelled like gear oil but not sure if this is normal or there is supposed to be a gasket in the fill and drain plugs as in i didnt see any when i took then off to replace the oil could that be my problem or is there somethng else i should be worried about. I just dont want to dump a ton of money into a free motor im already into it for 100. I had another issue with the coils i think moved inside the flywheel because after i shut her down i turned it by hand to make sure was cool and heard a slight grinding inside so i cant run her again till i get another puller to pop the flywheel so i kinda want to address the oil issue before i run all over trying to get another puller. Also even for about 10 min after it was out of the water it was leaking out if this small hole im not sure if it was a weep hole or an overflow of some sort the hole looks to be there for a reason it looks to clean of a hole to be from damage or a drill lol. sorry i have rambled on here but i like to be as clear as i can with things. I hope someone has some insight on this and a cant wait to hear back. Thanks in advance and i am happy to be a new member here

Oil in the barrel is normal. That is just unburned oil. Always replace the gaskets on the drain plugs, when you change the lower unit.
Your coils likely need to be adjusted, so they're not rubbing on the flywheel. The faces should be even with the machined bosses. You can see the red arrow on the attached photo.

Little or no money "wasted" so far....

You can always re-sell the pressure tank. And OMC ignition parts fit pretty much all the 50's and 60's and even some 70's OMC engines...so if this particular one doesn't work out...you can always use those parts on another motor or even re-sell them.

It's when you start investing money in parts that either only fit one motor...or can't be re-used where you need to think a bit.

That said; I'd check compression before you invest a lot more time into this one.

The 57 and earlier Sportwins are the best models, so it'll be worth getting right. I don't think it's going to take much to get this one running right. Make sure your carb settings are set at 1 1/2 turns out on the low speed and 3/4 turn out on the high speed. With it in gear and running about half throttle, you can turn your high speed in a tad, to smooth it out. Sometimes high speed runs best at around 1/2 out. Low speed might go a 1/4 turn in max.

Why are the '57 and earlier Evinrudes/Johnsons better than the '58 and later models?

The 57 and older had the larger sturdier, 5 bolt lower unit, that was used on the 15's and 18's. With a 10 horse powerhead on it. it hardly ever wore out. In 58, they went to the smaller lower unit, that was used on the 7.5/5.5 and the 10 horse powerhead was just a bit much for it. They worked okay, but if there was any water intrusion, they were quickly prone to failure and noted for popping out of gear.

Hows it going all? I just want to say thank you for the replies. so i will be getting my hands on the drain plug gaskets asap. Now there seems to be another issue with my flywheel. I got a puller from a friend and got the FW off and checked out what was going on inside and thank you Zyphyr for the picture and low and behold i had the coils in the right place lined up with the bosses in the picture the FW is actually slightly grazing one of the bosses (strange i would think it would be hitting them all if that was the case) so i am kinda leaning towards the FW is warped somehow. When i first reinstalled the FW after doing the coils and other stuff the FW spun freely not touching anything it wasnt till i shut her down after about 15 minutes of running i was going to fire it up again to try to adjust the carb while in gear i noticed a slight grinding noise  and also when i was about to shut it down i tried to put it in gear it killed the motor and actually that was when i was going to restart to set the carb some and heard the noise. I have had other boats and motors before this one but i never worked on any of them till this one so i am new to working on outboards /what to do now  Thanks in advance again for any info

kinda of an update. i got a chance to take a closer look and the FW is also hitting the inside of the small groove on the outer ring of the armature plate (once again only on the front side) is there a chance i did not fully seat the FW on the crankshaft or something of that nature.
