Have a question regarding impeller change. Should the driveshaft come out when you drop the lower unit? That is, how are you supposed to remove the pin on the driveshaft inside the housing? When I dropped the lower half the driveshaft stayed attached to the powerhead. Should it just slip up into the powerhead?

It is just a slip fit up into the crankshaft splines. If you can't pull it out, it means that it is rusted in place. That happens when somebody leaves out a 10 cent o-ring.

Went and tried to remove the driveshaft and guess what? Have had it soaking with penetrating oil for two days now. Don't know how I'm gonna get it out, any ideas?

Not without completely destroying the driveshaft. You may find that even if you successfully separate the driveshaft from the crankshaft you may have to replace both.

I assume you can't drop the lower unit due to the impeller key in the water pump housing and there isn't enough room to get the water pump housing off, right?

Correct, but I already have the old impeller out, kinda tore the old housing. I have a new housing and other parts and am ready to install, but I need to remove the driveshaft to get the new parts on.

File a small notch in the pump housing, enough for the drive pin to slip through, then assemble it the same way it came apart. It will work till the splines are completely rusted out of the crankshaft.

Well, that makes things easy then. Do as FR suggests.

Actually, since he managed to get the pump housing off I wouldn't even attempt to detached the driveshaft. At least this way its still useable. Separate the driveshaft and he'll need to replace both the driveshaft and crankshaft.

Could NOT get the driveshaft loose, so I notched the new housing and got it all back together, will give it a test run tomorrow. Thanks for all your help guys, it's nice having a forum like this to help one another out of difficult situations.
