Inspector Kluso reporting back.

If I install the drive shaft all the way until it seats, the pin that drives the impeller is just below the impeller plate. I would think it should be 1/4" above the impeller plate to be centered in the slot on the impeller.

My overall shaft length is 26-1/16" and the distance from the prop housing end to the impeller pin is 8-3/16".

Is an easy fix to have the impeller pin hole welded and polished and then drill another impeller pin hole 5/16" higher up...making it 8-1/2" inches from the housing end of the driveshaft? If so, should I just have the new hole drilled 180 degrees opposite the old pin hole or 90 degrees rotation to one side?

EDIT - Since this is just a small hole, can I JB weld it and then drill the new hole or does it really need a proper weld?

Here are pics of my Frankenstein - replacement lower unit with original drive shaft. See the impeller pin just below the impeller plate. That has to be a "no-no". Next two pics are to confirm measurements stated above.

There were gearcase changes for the Fastwin depending on whether the serial number was above or below 7000. Now I know that affected the prop shaft seal and housing. Not sure how it would affect the pinion and such. Do you have the drive shaft from the new gearcase to compare to the old?

Ok Ive been thinking about this.

Along with the prop shaft seal change, there was also a washer added to the pinion gear in the '57 Fastwins post serial number 7000. So, that may change the impeller pin location somehow. Never ran into this though sorry. Maybe F_R has an idea.

Frank pm'd me and got it right on. My pinion gear is missing the retaining ring that keeps the driveshaft from passing through it. The driveshaft will drop about 1/4" through the pinion gear without the retaining ring in place, which is the distance my impeller drive pin was below where it needed to be.

Short answer...get a retaining ring and put her back together.

Question...I am not sure which lower unit I have. It is the 5 bolt style from the mid/late 50s era and it fits my 1957 Fastwin perfectly, but not sure which year it is. Are the pinion gear diameters for retaining ring the same for all these...IE...what is my retaining ring size/part number?

Here is a pic of what I am missing in case this happens to anyone else.

Got her back together. Here is video of first run in my test barrell. I was able to adjust to get it to run good at highest speed possible in neutral. It idles down pretty well but I feel like maybe it should idle smoother and a little slower. Here is a short video showing it running fast well and then slowing it down as much as I could without it dying out. You can see it start to shake at the slow speed and it will die if I let it go any any slower. Am I expecting too much for it to be able to run this slow and smoothly?

It should idle down lower than that. One thing I have noticed that helped my motors was after I bought a timing fixture off FR to set the points. Getting them to fire exactly 180 degrees apart noticably helps with the idle....as do many other factors.

Ok...back to this one. No real changes since last post. My Lonestar 14V that I put this on has a side console but with an old rotary steering unit. I'll want to change that to a cable/pulley system. Is this OMC 377440 bracket the one I need to connect to my 57 Fastwin?

The spring loaded 'peg' in the center of your pulley bracket should 'key' into the keyhole in the center of the motor's handle. I think it's just visible in this pix you posted above:

You need the spring & hull corner pulleys plus cleats to make it all work as it was intended...
