Yup, release the Lock lever on the transom clamp...then you can move the pin around, but not out. It is spring loaded/connected to the clamp so it never comes out on the water. Great motors...have fun.

Just picked up one of these myself today in a package deal with a 5-horse Sears Gamefisher (which is what I was really wanting... he just wanted to get rid of the two together).... came with the tank, too... from what he said, though, I'm wanting a new pinion gear... any sources?

Twin City Outboards, Laings Outboards, Engine-Blade& Prop (Milwaukee, WI) are where I would start.

Watch ebay for complete lowers..many will fit, and cheap..
And they are easy to work on...split yers and have a look

You got the 18 in a package deal and it was the 5hp sears gamefisher you were wanting????? Fourgotten, you and I have really different ideas on outboards, HA HA!! :) I would have bought them both while thinking of how fast I could get rid of the gamefisher. But then again, I've never had a sears gamefisher so you might really like it. I'm not much on the 5hp, either, because I'm too impatient.
Interesting deal!

I think I got it running better now. I am going to take it out this weekend. I had replaced the spark plugs and it still ran bad. I rebuilt the carb last night. The finish was coming off the cork float in chunks. I think that was causing the problem. I hope it runs better anyway. The carb had never been apart before as far as I could tell. No marks on any of the screws.

Strangely enough, I had exactly the opposite thought... "Hmm... how fast can I get this Johnson working and flip 'er for a profit?" :D

The 5-horse was more along the size that I needed for my li'l boat (Sevylor inflatable semi-rigid... it take a max of 7.5 horses) while still being bigger than the '68 Evinrude Mate (1.5 HP) that I've been running on 'er... 'course, now that I've almost got the Sears motor running, I'll prolly have to sell the Mate... pity... that li'l motor is AWESOME for slow trolling... can drop 'er down to a slow stroll real easily...
