Re: 1957 Johnson 35HP model number?

Evinrude, Johnson and Gale motors are all very similar, at least in that horsepower range. That's why it is so easy to swap parts back and forth. Tashasdaddy spotted the same thing I did when I guessed it to be a 1958...the fuel pump mounting bosses.

I wouldn't go so far as to declare it "crap". Go ahead and assume it is a '58 RDE and fix it up. You can use that service manual as a "close enough". There are only a few parts that varied from year to year anyway. Better yet, if you want to do a restoration, call it a '57 Javelin. They are worth more. You can see what the motors are supposed to look like at http://www.old-omc.de/

Thanks a lot! I'll just go with the RDEL-19C. L is long shaft isnt it? I saw another post that explained how to measure them. Now i can finally order a manual in case anything goes wrong i'll have the right book to look at. Thanks so much for everybodys help. This is by far the best site i have found on the internet i think!

That could be a Gale serial number, but Gale didn't make a 35 hp until 58. I'm with TD, I think it's a 58 RDE 19 due to the fuel pump bosses and the machining for compression relief, although the compression relief stuff looks to be missing. I'm betting the lower, from the powerhead down, is 57 vintage. Johnson serial numbers were more than 1 million by 57, so it's not a Johnson serial number. Doesn't matter much, as long as it runs and behaves itself and you like it. Definitely a labor of love, evidenced by the custom steering attachment for the pulley steering. I like it...repaint it and spiff it up.

If its a long shaft it will be obvious. It will have a visable 5 inch extension in the leg.
