Coming out of gear with a bang is usually a bad fwd gear and clutch dog.

Yep, also check your shift linkage and fix all sloppiness. Once you remove the shift rod coupler, take ahold of your upper shift rod with a long nose plier and make sure there is no up and down play. If there is, you'll need to remove the powerhead and tighten up the bellcrank to shiftrod bolt. These often loosen up, from the motor jumping out of gear and worsening the problem. You might also check the shift linkage adjustment in relation to the shifter. On your model, you will see a longated hole with a bolt and nut in it and you will see a screw on the shifter that clamps it tight on the shifter shaft. This is how you would adjust your shifter, once the center position of neutral is obtained. If it still jumps out of gear after your shift linkage adjustment is done, then it's likely the shift cradle in the clutch dog is excessivley worn. You want less than .010 gap, where the shift cradle fits in the clutch dog. Any little bit of sloppiness in the shifting mechanisms will cause a big issue with popping out of gear.

thanks everyone. it does sound like my shift linkage is the problem. it wiggles loosly. is it hard to remove powerhead to tighten that bolt? it has only slipped out of gear a few times so maybe im catching it in earlier stages huh? thanks again fellas!
