Friend picked up a 1957 Crestliner with what he believes is a 57 Merc 45hp 4 cylinder outboard. How is that motor for reliability? Was it a decent or a pain in the rear? It is not running. Where do you spend the money, fix or look for different motor. Looking under the cover it looks like a C cosmetically. Any input would be appreciated.

All depends on what your friend wants....

Some WANT a vintage OB on a vintage boat. Often an original to the boat vintage OB is even more desireable...

If he can afford a brand new motor w a warranty and service agreement, thats often extremely attractive too.

Would he rather work on a motor or use the boat? To afford boats and boating, i buy older and have to work on stuff myself, which takes me a very long time....

Older Mercury's can be tougher to work on then older Johnson/Evinrudes, but some that run Mercs wouldnt even consider running a J/E instead.

Let's start by nailing down what your friend has, as the first year for the 45hp was 1958. Model and serial number are needed.

That said, the 1950s Mercury 4-cylinder models are among the sharpest looking, best performing motors of the era, it not ever. They do have their service quirks (special tools needed in several areas, carbon steel shafts prone to rust, steeper learning curve than Johnrudes) but the results can be worth it if you do the work yourself. An OEM service manual is an absolute MUST. The 1965 & Prior manual is generally easy to find.
