1958 3 hp Johnson Seahorse

My neighbor gave me the 3 hp Johnson and a buddy of mine and I replaced the recoil rewind spring. My other neighbor wants to use it on his little boat.
The problem is it only locks in the down position when turned around 180 degrees for reverse. When the motor is rotated back to go forward the locking mechanism is pushed up. So when the motor is driven in forward the prop comes up out of the water.

I have a 1956 3 hp Johnson. It is correct that it only locks in the reverse position. In the forward position, the motor thrust pushes the motor into the transom. How is the motor kicking up? Are you testing it in a drum and not actually on the boat in the water?

It can't come up when going forward, unless it's mounted on the front of the boat.

Just a bit of advice


Fuel to oil mix ratio should be 16:1 and absolutely definitely no less than 24:1 ratio. I spoke with experts on antique outboard motor club inc, forum and they highly stress using the 16:1 ratio of fuel to provide increase lubrication and longevity to your motor.

Fuel oil ratio 16:1 is 1 gallon of fuel to 8 ounce of TCW-3 marine 2cycle oil (personally I subscribe to this fuel ratio)

Fuel oil ratio 24:1 is 1 gallon of fuel to 5.3 ounce of TCW-3 marine 2cycle oil
24:1 is 3 gallon of fuel to 16 ounce of TCW-3 marine 2cycle oil

Oh, make sure the little screw on your vent cap on your tank is open, clean and clear when you are starting and running your motor. Don't forget to close it if your transporting or laying it down or you will have a mess on your hands

I have a ?58 Seahorse 3hp JW-14 that is having running issues.
The engine will run when cold but stalls when it starts to warm up. Then it is hard to start back up again. When the problem first was occurring, I took it to a small local marine shop and they cleaned the carburetor and said it would run fine. Well that didn?t seem to fix it and it still stalls when hot.

I have changed the spark plugs, tightened and inspected all of the fittings around the fuel line and carburetor and they seem to be working properly.

It should be noted that I got it to run, only after I enriched the mixtures on both high and low end to level 5 or more (I?m using 16:1 fuel ratio) Though it runs, it still seems like it is running poorly and not at full capacity. I base that on some of the youtube videos I have seen featuring the same engine.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi davjomar. Welcome to iboats. Sounds like you may have an issue with you ignition components failing after they warm up. No worries, you can rebuild the entire thing yourself for less than $75. I would also a recommend a carb rebuild as well ($25). You can get both a tune up kit and carb kit right here at iboats along with most other routine parts. Here are some handy links.
